I’m a mid-level in-house copywriter in Chicago making $68k, no bonuses, decent benefits. I’ve got 5 years of experience and a great portfolio, but when I ask around, it seems like I’m on the low end. Is this normal for in-house, or should I be pushing harder for agency/freelance rates?

That's definitely on the low end! Look around at other roles in the area and see what they're going for. Sometimes working at smaller brands means smaller paychecks.

That’s super low.

If you have a great portfolio put it out there. The market will help you get where you should be.

Am I particularly uptight, or is writing meant to be done alone, without a partner talking to you? With past partners, we chat through script notes and then I go off to execute. Current partner likes to sit and chat as I write. To me, writing is crafting a conversation. So I can’t talk to you and simultaneously talk to this audience. Of course I can just say “I’m gonna go write.” But since we’re both CD level, I’m like…is this his first rodeo? Maybe other writers are different though.

Are there any programs, schools, or courses that I can complete online while also working full time? Thanks!
