Handbag just have something that’s comfortable to carry around all day. Doesn’t need to be designer.
Biggest networking tips:
1. Be selfish; meaning if the conversation isn’t serving you excuse yourself “sorry I need to check an email, go to a session, etc.” I’ve wasted so much time at events networking with the wrong people. If the conversation doesn’t serve you just cut it off and move onto something that brings you value. You’re there to better yourself and your business mind, not people please.
2. Easy conversation starters:
“Are you traveling in for the conference?” “Oh where are you from?”
“Are you enjoying the conference?” “Do you come to this every year?”
Ask questions— people like to talk about themselves and they actually like you more if you inquire about them vs talking about yourself.
And if you need a break, just go find a quiet place to sit by yourself for a minute. Networking and talking can be overwhelming and exhausting. Nothing wrong with disappearing and grabbing a coffee/ break for yourself for a minute and then get back to it.
This is excellent - thank you!
Look around the room. There’s going to be at least one more person with that “I don’t want to do this, maybe I can go hide in the bathroom” look. Go stand next to them and say “I hate schmoozing”
You don’t need designer anything. Just remember comfortable shoes and a manageable bag for daily must haves. Outside of that, try to allow yourself a small workout or meditation time each day to center yourself and protect your energy.
People at conferences love to chat it up—- it’s really as simple as saying hello and smiling! And do not hesitate to ask if you can join tables at shared meals or to strike up a chat with a complement. “HI, I love you shoes - where did you get them” or “Did you attend xxx session? What were some of the highlights for you?”
I don’t bring a handbag to conferences at all because I’m afraid to set it down somewhere and forget it. I usually where a blazer or suit jacket that has real pockets and put everything I need in there.
Regarding small talk, most people like to talk about themselves, so just ask a couple basic questions and see how it goes. You’d be surprised at how much info you can get from a 5 minute convo, especially since everyone is in the same boat. You’ll also be able to spot the people similar to you, and you’ll bond over having trouble with small talk.
As far as handbag, my favorite is the Dior book tote. I take mine to a ton of conferences and work functions. Also, they help with small talk. People will ask about it. They seems to be a good ice breaker. Especially if you get your name on it. It’s free, just takes some time. Then, a ton of people will ask about it.
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh M g.... if I could bring myself to spend the money on a dior book tote... I WOULD! But... maybe for now a knockoff :P
Honestly it’s stressful. My advice is head in there with a mission to talk to 2-3 folks and leave them reasonably quickly.
Point 1, I usually bring a small over shoulder bag and then use the canvas bag they invariably give you for the tat / swag.

I’m the same as you are- crowds are exhausting but if you find one or two people to break the ice with it gets easier.
On 4 trips now I’ve been using a laptop friendly backpack as my airplane personal item that a small travelon crossbody purse ($34) its into. That way if I’m not carrying the laptop I have a small purse for wallet phone etc. here it is: Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Mini Shoulder Bag, Black, One Size, 8.5 x 8.5 x 2 https://a.co/d/cI1EP8w
The backpack has a frame top that zips and comes in lots of colors & designs but I got black. It fits under airplane seat. I like being hands free and having a backpack style to carry the laptop means I can carry it easily and not put it down and lose it. It also has a crazy capacity if you add extras like a fleece or two water bottles on each side.
Here it is, $35 is less than I think I paid, lots of pockets and secure too: LOVEVOOK Laptop Backpack for Women Fashion Travel Bags Business Computer Purse Work Bag with USB Port, Black https://a.co/d/9F8f9s5
Thanks for sharing this! Looking into it now!
I actually just bring a small clutch purse and my iPad because most of the times the slides are online and I download them before the talk so I can take notes. My iPad has a place for my business cards and open.
As far as conversations, I’m the same way but I listen and then just join in when I’m comfortable. I also like asking questions to start a conversation. Good luck, relax and enjoy yourself.
People love to talk about themselves. Come up with four or five general questions and start a conversation and see where it goes. Spend 5-10 minutes with each person and then politely excuse yourself. Also, if you can stand it go hang out with the smokers outside. I don’t know what it is but that crowd always seems to have great info and are usually fun!
