I'm beginning to wonder if my age is the real reason I haven't been able to find work? I'm 57, and have been looking for a job for over seven months. I've been getting plenty of interviews for jobs I'm overqualified for, and have been willing to work for less money than someone with my experience typically earns. But I still never make it past the first or second in person interviews. I can't think of any other reason why I wouldn't have been offered something by now.

I think ageism is a real concern in HR. I’ve noticed companies looking to hire younger and younger employees. I guess they’re a lot cheaper to employ and don’t stress about healthcare as much.

I agree as well. Agism is so real. I’m experiencing that discrimination and I’m in my early 40’s.

Hello,

It’s completely understandable to feel this way after months of searching, but please don’t let the silence make you question your worth. At 57, your experience, judgment, and leadership are assets, not liabilities. Many candidates face longer hiring cycles today, especially when companies struggle to align budgets, expectations, or internal decisions, it’s often not a reflection of you. Staying confident, highlighting adaptability, and positioning your experience as a solution to their problems can make a difference.

I actually know someone who helped my brother navigate a challenging job search and get back on track, and you can reach him at:

Stay encouraged, the right organization will recognize the value you bring. Your experience still matters, and the right opportunity will come.

I'll tell you when I get an applicant that is overqualified, and unemployed, my first thought is that they would take my position to have something and leave as soon as they got the real job they wanted, especially if there is a considerable difference in pay. I've had it happen several times. If that's not the case I would reassure the interviewer or maybe tell them that you are burned out and just want better work/life balance, and not the stress of the higher position. Something to make them feel like you won't jump ship right away. As a HR Manager I'm sure you can appreciate how much time and money is spent orienting someone, and then to have them leave and have to start over is, is very frustrating as well.

Ageism undeniably exists, but it is probably a very small part to do with the struggles you are facing. In my 25+ years in the industry, I have never seen the job market anywhere close to this bad. There are so many candidates and so few jobs to go around. Everyone is struggling to get an offer.

like

Ageism is so real and it isn’t talked about enough. It feels like it’s never right. It’s either you’re Too overqualified or you have many years of experience but don’t have the right exp they are looking for.

Had two rounds of interviews for an in house role and really like the company/job. I followed up Friday regarding next steps and was told they are still interviewing and should be wrapping up soon. Advice on how to stay calm? I want the position and need to know if there’s a way to speed up the process.

I’m interviewing for a start up and the role sounds interesting. Usually for the “test” part of the interview I’ve had to analyze data. This company wants me to develop a growth strategy that outlines key initiatives for growth, different opportunities, experiments I’d run, KPIs, and working cross-functionally.

Is this a lot for an interview?

I’m a little afraid of doing all this work to then just have them take my ideas and not hire me.

Those of you that interviewed at aws sales, did your interviewers go through specific bullet points on your resume?
I understand its lp focused, im just curious if ppl used examples outside of their resume for majority of their stories.

Did they ask you specifics of your resume bullet points?

I made a couple errors at a new job. An important document to be distributed had wrong information on it, which was proofread by 2 other people. Then a couple of typos in emails, the person micromanaging me told me to send out but I didn’t fix the errors. Failed to meet a deadline but completed 95%. I was written up over all this last week, fired this week. There’s a lot more to this but I think it’s because the DM doesn’t like me.
