I’m currently at a tech company but not a product manager. How would I break into the role (at any company) with no product manager experience but 6 years of work experience overall? Would I need to start as an associate and take a pay cut?

If you are currently working at a tech company, set up some time with the PM Manager or Director to discuss how to make the transition. They will likely be able to look at your experience and give you advise about how best to proceed. They may even be willing to have you take on some PM duties or shadow PMs.

Frankly, most of the PMs I've worked with had no specific education in Product Management. I've known PMs who were former SEs, UX Designers, Product Trainers, Developers, and from Sales. A lot depends on how well your product/domain experience aligns with the product your are managing. For example, the PM for an analytical product I worked on was hired because he had a degree in Math, he had no experience as a PM, but his background meant he understood the product and the users.

I agree with PM1, certs w/o experience don't really go too far!

I have worked with many PM, in some companies there is a split role of PM. Inbound and outbound. Inbound is the more design and functional, outbound is more meeting customer and evangelism.

I would encourage you to get project management experience. You also need to show expertise in the area of the product line you are going to support. Networking and building out supporters will also help. Do all of this, and when opportunity arises you will be ready to take it on.

I switched my company 3 months ago for a kind of similar role thinking I will have more exposure to technologies but as it is a product based company, I am supporting their own product only.

I am feeling directionless these days. Please guide me.

Hey y'all, kind of a two part question:
1. I enjoy the people management more than individual contributor stuff. What career paths do you see in our industry for people who are managing support engineering teams?
2. What certifications are valued today? Seems like being a AWS Cloud Practitioner is a good general one, but are there others that stand out?

Hi all, was hoping for clarity on offers from FANG/Tier 2 tech I received recently. Base pay is still within range of 130-150K, but equity components have dropped dramatically. For reference, for similar positions, I was receiving grants of 150K - 200K over 4 years for data analyst positions (4-5 YOE) in Aug’21-Feb’22. For personal reasons, I did not accept these offers. Now the equity grants are coming in like 50-70K over 4 years. Is this market wide for non SWE/PM roles due to stock market?

I've been interviewing with some companies, and now I have to decide between JPMorgan Chase and Globant.

Globant is more innovative, and has remote work. I will enter to work with a Sillicon Valley startup based in San Francisco. The tech stack is React, Nextjs, AWS, and a serverless architecture.

JPM is semi remote, and less innovative. The tech stack Java, SpringBoot and AWS. But I'd do more migration tasks, like dockerize projects and pass them to kubernetes. What would you choose?
