I use a simple rule: if a client drains more energy than they’re worth and blocks better gigs, they’ve gotta go. Try to line up a backup first, but don’t wait until you’re too exhausted to take new opportunities.
You're right about hustle culture, that's how everyone I know is surviving right now. I do acting, waitressing, and then freelance writing and editing. But it feels like the last one is the hardest one these days with how many employers are going to AI and paying basement level rates. When you find a good job, stick with it. If you're not making at least minimum wage with a client, I would encourage you to let them go. Free up your time for better opportunities.
Totally feel you on this—freelance life can feel like a constant tightrope. I try to check in with myself: if a client is consistently draining, low-paying, or creating more stress than they’re worth, that’s usually my sign. Sometimes dropping one actually frees up the energy to do better work or land a gig that pays more. It’s scary, but protecting your bandwidth matters just as much as your bank account.
If you want my honest opinion, I'd say you're at that point already. As soon as work stress starts to bleed into your personal life, it's time to make a change. Figure out which of the three is most problematic and drop it like a hot potato. If that doesn't improve things, repeat the process.
I think when the stress overtakes everything else, it’s time to take it a bit slower. I get the hustle culture but you don’t want to make the rest of your life miserable over your job. That’s for you.
The main thing is to keep the work life and personal life balance- burnout is a serious thing especially when it affect your work! I think you’re at the point to have a possible less client and have some time to rest and then maybe next month you can work more?
