I've said it before and I'll say it again... you work in MARKETING. There's really no such thing as an emergency that should require you to even be checking your work messages while you're off the clock. Before your next PTO, make it clear that you won't have access to your phone and don't htink about it until you're back.
Two things can be true at once: you can enjoy a holiday and work still goes on. People will keep working on projects and you will be cc'd/ tagged etc. Bc that needs to happen.
Your boss is probably tagging you for visibility on convos so you can easily be clued in on relevant items when you RETURN from vacation.
How to set a hard boundary? Delete Slack. Right now after you read this message. Hell, delete fishbowl too while your at it for the week and FREAKING ENJOY MEXICO OKAYYYY AMIGA/O!!!! Life is too short. Take the time off and have a great time with your partner.
You set them before you leave. You have a one on one with your boss and let them know your vacation expectations and ensure they align.
I usually say “I’m taking care of x y Z before I leave. My coverage will be “employee”. I can work on Wednesday but come Thursday through Wednesday I am completely unplugging.
Unless you have a crazy deadline on a project that someone else can’t cover that should do it.
You aren’t telling them your plan. You are telling them your plan ahead of time to ensure they don’t have any issue with it.
Just tell them you won't have access to communication much and will get to most of it when you return. If they have a true emergency, have them call or text you, but say you won't be monitoring slack or email. That way, unless it is a call or text, you can safely ignore it. As noted below- there are very few true marketing emergencies. No life or death here.
My wife has the same issue. I will only go on vacation with her if she shuts her phone down except for one hour a day. Hard stop. She told her boss and employees this and it seemed to work. She's still employed.
Leave your work phone at home or you won’t switch off at all.
