So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?

I would not do this. There’s probably a clause in the staffing agency’s contract that says you can’t accept direct contracts from the main company for a certain period of time after working with the staffing agency unless the staffing agency gets a payout.
Also, once these companies get you in as a contractor… they might find they have little incentive to hire you as a FTE.
I’d wait for the full-time role. Contract roles pop up like monthly… you’ll get another shot if you turn it down now.
so I'll take the contract role even if I don't get the permanent one. Either way I don't want to pass up on the contract role then not get the permanent one and still be working at my current job. Since it's such a big tech company and the contract role is through a staffing agency is this possible?
Hmm, I would wait for the full-time role to be secured before leaving your job. Contractor roles and creatives are usually the first to go
Politics are such that you’ll have a hard time leaving one role for the other within the same tech company. I’d be transparent that you’re interviewing for another role (don’t mention it’s the same company) and need wait to compare offers. The FTE role should have stocks and way better benefits than the contractor role.
Pro
Nope.
That’s a bad move. They’ll do an internal review of you if they truly want you as a full time candidate. That’s where they’ll find out that you’re already employed by the company as a contractor. Next zoom call you’ll have to explain that you were just onboarded 1 month ago and will probably be burning a big bridge with your boss by jumping ship to another group in the company. They’ll also be on the phone with your boss next to see if they at least knew anything about this.
Please record these calls and put them on the TicToc. You want to go viral, do this.
Go for it. Just be aware that there's a chance that the contract role will end up costing you the permanent one. It's still better than being where you're at right now. Right?
I feel this would be too much of a risk. How long can you delay accepting the offer for the contract role?
Most places don't mind that. I would check to be sure. But most of the time they want to move you into a permanent role if they really like you.
Pro
In the same group, not a completely different group. If you formally accept the contract position typically you should wait at least toward the end of your contract and talk to your direct report about it.
I’m in a kind of similar situation. I was offered a contract role but an end goal for me is to be full time at this company. The team id be joining rarely has headcount so I wouldn’t hold my breath to be converted to FTE.
I’m wondering if I take this contract job should I kiss my FTE dreams goodbye at this company?
