One thing I remember someone telling me is let them keep doing the thing they are doing until they are done and over it. Don’t try to force the next thing on them til they are ready. Also we always brought kids benedryl just in case of massive meltdown. IPad really has been the savior.
Honestly, just the usual stuff - snacks, a tablet with fave shows downloaded onto it, toys & a smile... we recently did a full day of flying (LA to Ohio, 2 flights!) and it was rough.
I haven’t flown with my baby yet. But it does freak me out. I think it will be fine. Good luck!!
Hide babies favorite small toys in brown paper lunch bags 2 days prior to travel. Let baby “unwrap” each toy by taking it out of the (delightful to them) crunchy bags one by one at spaced-out intervals during the flight. When you hit your limit and baby cannot stand things on the flight anymore, try letting them play with a cheap electric toothbrush. I did that out of desperation once and it was the only half hour of peace I had on a long flight.
Pack one activity for every 30 mins of flight time. When I brought my daughter on a 7 hour flight, we thought of 28 things she could do (including the return trip). Stickers, colouring, simple things. Gives you peace of mind knowing you have a whole bag of tricks and a plan.
Honestly flying is hell with children that young unless they have an iPad. Or its a short flight. I still shudder thinking about a Paris to NY flight with my 18-month old twins years ago.
Oh I know this stress! I traveled from NYC-SFO and back with mine at 8 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years. But I promise, it will be fine. Keep in mind that airports are pretty low volume at this stage of the pandemic, which means less time in line for TSA, less hustle at the gate, and (generally speaking) less packed planes. Check the seating - the back rows are best with a 20 month old. Also know that the flight crew wants you and your little one to have a safe and drama free flight, too! Agree with all the awesome advice about snacks, toys, and devices. Just remember that it will be over in 5 hours, and you will survive. A little infant Tylenol just before departure never hurts :) Good luck!
Packet chewy candies like gummy bears for the ascent and descent to relieve their ear pressure. They can’t understand how to relieve the pressure by swallowing or drinking water and then panic and then it’s over. Buy kids heads phones for your tablet and practice wearing them a few days before. Oh also! Melissa and Doug puffy sticker book is a big hit at that age!
