Has anyone had experience with using SSRIs as a child? Was it able to be weaned off after a while, or is it a lifelong dependency?

I started at 18, so slightly different. Frankly I think it was premature to go on them now. And my mom just sent me to her PCP who prescribed them without asking questions. I've been on them for 12 years now. Tried going off once and had to go back on after a few months.

I’ve dipped in and out. Went on them about 3 years ago and took them for 6 months; helped me see through the clouds and then came off. Went back on them recently probably because of covid related problems and only plan to be on them another 6 months

My daughter took them for 2 years as teen and was weaned off successfully.

I am talking to her later today and will ask her

I took an anti depressant as a child and all the way through high school. It wasn’t an SSRI though. It was a different kind of anti depressant called Tofranil. I originally started it as a child because it helps with bed wetting , and I had a severe issue with this well past normal age and it interfered with my quality of life (sleepovers, camp, etc.). I continued on with the medication as I got older because I had issues with depression so my doctor just kept prescribing it to me.

I stopped taking it when I went to college because I wanted to be able to drink alcohol and have a normal experience. I was fine in college for the most part although still had depressive episodes and anxiety. When I was in law school, I tried an SSRI (Zoloft) for the first time after spiraling out of control. I eventually weaned off of that. I have taken other SSRIs since then but find I don’t tolerate them well. Now, I just manage with CBT, healthy diet, and exercise.

CBT wouldn’t have helped for the initial reason I started the medication when I was a young kid because we had already tried everything possible leading up to that before doing meds, including sleep training and all kinds of stuff.

However, in retrospect I definitely should have been in therapy when I was in junior high and high school. I had some pretty severe things going on and should have been talking to someone about them. My parents even asked me if I wanted to go, but I said no. I just couldn’t. I couldn’t talk about any of it until years later. So, I don’t know if I would have been able to do the work necessary for CBT to be effective at that time in my life. It’s hard to say what would have worked better.

I will say that the meds helped when I needed them and were a bridge to get me to where I needed to be until I was able to deal with what I needed to deal with. Medicine is not a bad thing. It doesn’t have to be taken forever. If it can help until the therapy has time to be effective, then that is a good thing too.

First started taking them at 17 and was able to weaned off 6 years later successfully by basically always forgetting to take them. Started taking them again at the age of 31 and went cold turkey three years later withou any issues (though generally not recommended to do it this way). First time was Prozac then switched to Citalopram, second time was Escacitalopram in case it matters.

helpful

Not me! Started at 14. When you do wean off though be very careful. I would feel so sick like I felt like I was going to throw up for days and that was going down very slowly.

helpful

I was on Zoloft from ages 15-18. I weaned myself off at 18. I wish I had never been on it though, too many side effects and it didn’t even touch my anxiety. Therapy was more helpful. I have been able to manage well until recently due to some major life events, so now I’m looking into more intensive therapy and possibly a more anxiety specific medication.

helpful

Out of curiosity, why do so many people go back on them? Currently on SSRIs (mid twenties) and hoping to eventually wean off

When the mental health issues come back, the SSRIs come back.

likehelpful

I was on them a few years about 20 years ago and just stopped. No issues.

Thank you Partner 1. How did you deal with the depression / anxiety when you stopped the medicine, or did the root causes just go away?

I’m 23 and independent. Working full time and studying full time is taking a serious toll on my mental health. I’m always tired, unmotivated, depressed, sometimes angry at my life, and I don’t know what to do. I’m in my sophomore year. I also don’t work in the field that I’m studying (computer science) because I’m always rejected without an interview, which is another aggravating factor for me. It’s hard to have time to work on personal projects to make my portfolio more attractive.

CFP study programs:

I'm a little confused on Danko - does he offer a self-study option for the coursework requirement? On his website it looks like each module has a 4-day virtual class which I wouldn't be able to attend due to working full time. Does this program also include self-study material, and the classes are just supplementary/optional? I was also looking at Dalton for self-study and Danko for test prep. Thoughts?
