Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

Was the range initially provided acceptable? If not, you should have told them at the start of the process. Did you prove a range? Depending on how far outside their range what you are seeing is, you might be able to negotiate. Outside of just market data, do the responsibilities align with the pay they offered? If not, that can also be a bargains tool.
Ask them if that’s the best they can offer based on national average for the job title. Like “according to the natural average for a (whatever the job title is) position, this seems to be below the average and I’m just curious.” Something along those lines.
Even if it’s in the range but lower end of the scale, then it’s your decision to decline or accept the offer of the position based on your feelings.

To start negotiating your salary, express enthusiasm for the offer, thank the hiring manager, and counter with a specific number or range backed by market research and your relevant experience.
1. Prepare and Research
Before you open negotiations, you need to know exactly what the market rate is for your role and location.
Leverage tools: Look up average salaries using the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Salary.com, PayScale, or Glassdoor.
Set your baseline: Know the minimum number you need to make, and a target number based on your research.
2. The Negotiation Script (What to Say)
When replying to the offer over email or the phone, frame your request around your professional value rather than personal financial needs.
Example Counter-Offer Script:
"Thank you so much for the offer; I am very excited about the opportunity to join the team and contribute to [Company Name]'s goals. Based on my experience, skill set, and the market research I've conducted for similar roles in the area, I was hoping to discuss a base salary closer to $[Target Number]. Would there be any flexibility in the budget to meet this?"
3. Consider Total Compensation
If the company is firm on their base salary, you can negotiate other perks and benefits to increase your total compensation package:
Time off: Additional Paid Time Off (PTO) or extra holidays.
Bonuses: A sign-on bonus or a guaranteed early performance review.
Flexibility: Remote work days, a flexible schedule, or home office stipends.
