My current CTC is 17 LPA which i know is not as per market standards but need to know how much should be the market rate as per this experience.

Stay IN-HOUSE. You have no clue just how good you have it.
I worked as a prosecutor (equivalent to in-house?) for babies 1, 2, & 3. I was in private practice for baby #4. There is no comparison. AND the future is fickle, so no ability to predict if / when you could return to in-house.
Get the offer in writing. Take it to your higher up(s). Tell them you are not taking the offer, are staying where you are, and this is not a shaken down. Nonetheless, the open market thinks you are worth $75k more than your current salary so figure out how to equalize things a bit. Perhaps a $10k bump today. Perhaps a $25k bump in 2025. Perhaps a gradual $50k bump over the next 24 months. Just get it in writing.
You will make more money changing jobs with your salary increasing every time you move positions. If earning the most money is what is most important, that is your path. If work / life balance is the most important, avoid billable hours like the plague.
I love kids. I love being a parent. My path has been family focused. For me, staying in-house would have been a better option to remain focused on my family.
Caveat: your discretion is infallible and there are no wrong answers here, so be your own best boss.
Can I message you? Or can you share your experience as a prosecutor ? I’m in insurance defense, have 2 kids (wfh) but would like more trial experience. Thoughts ?
Would you or your spouse be pregnant? Biglaw mat leave is usually pretty good for pregnant associates. Also, is the firm biglaw or not? And is 75k a significant percent of your current take home? If you’re not going to a BL firm (for the resume line) or getting a SIGNIFICANT bump in relative pay, I would personally stay IHC if you like it and have a good upwards path. But a lot of this decision depends on specific info — e.g., billable target, current WLB, existing quality of resume, etc. I did BL for the first year of our first baby and it was hard but worth it to get the money and resume, then I jumped ship ASAP.
I think it depends on what firm, what practice you’re going to, what your class year is, and what the hours requirement is.
I can’t imagine any scenario where I would go back to a firm from in house, especially if you are paid well and like what you’re doing. You’ll always make more at a firm, but at a significant cost
