I’m interviewing at Slalom Consulting and the recruiter said that the exact role would be defined as I go through the interview rounds, but would be along the lines of SC, principal, etc. Is that the norm? Seems a bit odd to not know exactly what role I’m interviewing for.

Not the norm but not uncommon.
I interviewed as they were rolling out the new title framework, and I didn't even know my level until the office. Just knew the practice.
C1, technically not sure what I’m interviewing for in this new way Slalom is doing things lol.
It is the norm from my experience. We will know the skill set we are hiring for, but the level / title is often not locked down (though it is more likely to be at higher levels).
During the interview process, information learned and candidate performance can influence which title we offer.
That sounds pretty neat. Thanks for explaining that. I just want to move away from a developer role, so I don’t want them offer me a dev role just because that’s mostly my background. But I’m speaking to it as much as I can through the process.
There are considerable differences for expectations for levels at our firm relative to hierarchy at other consulting firms. For instance, going from SC to Principal is hard and they are probably determining your ability to produce
Good point. I rather just ask and not wast their time or mine if it’s not the right fit.
