The Prince - Niccolo Machiavelli
48 Laws of Power is a better way to learn about Machiavellianism and other advanced political games.
First, Break All the Rules. Based on Gallup research and breaks down what separates great managers from average ones, and the importance and impact of great managers. Gives specific, actionable practices and many if not most are non-intuitive (hence the title).
After reading it, I also connected the dots that leadership at Deloitte must have read it, because many of the changes to how Deloitte handles performance management and counseling that I didn’t understand seem like they were inspired by the content of this book.
When I became a new manager (last year) I bought Harvard’s Business Reviews “10 Must Reads for New Managers” and subscribed to Managers Tool Podcast and started from the very first episode advising one-on-ones with direct reports. Game changer. I’m also considering going to Managers Tools conference where they hold an in person clinic.
Can I also 2nd SM2? 😊 The guys at Mangers Tools highly recommend that book!
