Yes if I got a sign on bonus. Negotiate a 20% sign on bonus. Start higher at say 25-30% so you have some place to go.
Ex. Say you make 100k now. Negotiate a 20k sign on so you make $120k this year and 100k next year … mentally reallocate things so you make $110k this year and next. That gives you 2 years to get the promotion. You get the money you want upfront (which is better than taking it all over 2 years in salary).
I worked my way up from the very bottom at $25k out of college in a recession. Sacrificed thousands of dollars of my own money along with days and nights to earn certifications and two masters including an MBA from MIT. So suck it.
There is always money somewhere. And if you don’t ask you don’t get. You’d be surprised how many jobs from social workers to rad techs to niche skill roles get 15-30K sign on bonuses. But it sounds like you have a degree in dance theory and no skills … so yeah for you it would be near impossible lol.
If you have a desirable and rare skill then sign on bonuses are absolutely a reasonable part of a comp package. Salary bands are a lot harder to get variances on so sign on bonuses are a standard way to get around those fixed brackets for great candidates.
I've really learned that growth potential doesn't mean much if it's not very clearly defined at the beginning. Every job says that you'll have growth potential but they often want people to be stuck where they are with how much they're making for as long as possible.
As a general rule you should only move on if there's a substantial pay increase. Perhaps there could be an exception if the potential for advancement was very strong. Still, it's a gamble on the future, and you'd be disrupting your life based on a promise that may never pay off.
Do you dislike where you are now?
Yeah, I've been in that exact spot before, and it's a tough call because "strong growth potential" is recruiter-speak for "we think you'll make more later, trust us." It's vague as hell, and hard to bank on when your bills are the same today.
Personally? Yeah, I'd consider a true lateral salary move if the upside feels real and tangible and not just promises.
I think I’d consider it if the long term growth potential really seems solid. Sometimes it’s worth it to take a step back for bigger gains down the road, but it’s definitely a gamble!
