If you had an SA position but think another firm would be better, just apply. If you didn’t, network in a thoughtful and consistent way and hope that someone offers to consider you, but avoid asking directly. Quite a few of my friends were successful the second way.

Never stop applying. 3L recruiting is to fill gaps and firms find they have gaps throughout the year. I got my spot May 15 of my 3L and probably wouldn't have applied except I went to an event on a whim and they pushed me to.
Agree. Got mine while studying for the bar.
I’ve interviewed a few folks for a 3L spot recently—V50 firm. Because grades and such are fixed, here are the variable items and/or questions your interviewers may think about:
1. If you were a summer associate at another firm, why aren’t you returning to that firm? Was it your choice or theirs? If yours, why is our firm different from the previous firm? If theirs, what was the reason—economics or you?
2. Do you know about our firm and the type of work we do, or are you literally just applying for whatever job/for the biglaw salary? Money is obvi v important, but have a believable story about why you want the Firm.
Other than that, network authentically. Don’t just send obsequious emails about some bullshit or another. Reach out to people professing interest in their subject area, as well as evidence. For example, I primarily do renewable energy finance and development. I’d look for someone who has taken classes, joined clubs, read books, or has least taken the effort to learn about the topic. You don’t have to be an expert by any means, but should be able to talk intelligently about the applicable topic for 10-15 minutes.
Sometimes a job is just a job, but as a 3L, it’s on you to sell yourself and build a believable narrative. The bar, as you likely know, is higher than it would be for a 2L or someone with a year’s experience. Is it fair? No. But true nonetheless.

Literally got an offer to a v15 a week after graduation. (Had to renig on midlaw) 2021 was different for corporate but still, don’t give up on the search
