I’m looking at an offer for $135k in Atlanta, but the company wants me on a strict 4-day RTO schedule. On paper, $135k goes a long way in the South, but the office is located right in the worst part of the Midtown traffic gridlock. I calculated that I’d be losing at least 10 hours a week just sitting on I-85, not to mention parking costs and wear-and-tear. Does a lower cost-of-living salary lose its value the moment you’re forced back into a soul-crushing daily commute?

There are plenty of people around here that commute 2+ hours a day in a Prius so that they can have a good job in the bay area (San Francisco, San Jose, etc.) and raise their family in a more suburban / affordable environment in surrounding cities like Sacramento. It boils down to one's priorities and what trade offs are worth it to you.

I personally abhor traffic, so I would take the job to get back to work in my 7th month of unemployment, but I would update my resume keep looking for a better long-term for or seriously consider moving closer if I like the job.

Not ideal with traffic but could you listen to audiobooks or call friends to make the commute more manageable?

Not getting murdered around work also has its perks. Just say no.

I would not think it’s too bad. Allot of companies are doing RTO’s now…In Atlanta that’s not a bad $$ and I know how the drive is there I use to live there for a few years and do the same drive in each morning 5 days a week…So while I feel for ya it’s not terriable. Just weigh the pro’s and con’s to it and take the good with the bad….like other’s said take it, update the resume and keep looking for a long term fit….

As someone who lives in Atlanta, DO NOT MOVE HERE, WE FULL!

But seriously, four days in office is annoying, but depending on where you live, the commute may not be that bad. I'm in Smyrna and can get to that area in about 30 minutes in traffic. Also, can you come in earlier or later to avoid traffic? My job allows that. Also depending on where your live, Marta might be an option. Don't know where you are now but if the job sounds good to you, try it out for a year or two and make that money and then move on.

You answered your own question when you described it as "soul crushing"

What are your thoughts on pay discrepancies based on family structure? Ex. Two people do the same job but one is paid more or given a larger bonus “because they have kids and you live alone” or “because their family is struggling”. Is that an ethical factor if both employees do the same job at the same pace, quality, etc?

Got an offer for SE III at a large tech company. Product I'd be working on interests me and I think I could grow more than in my current role.

Currently I make 180k base and have ISO/RSUs @ startup (60k/yr worth on paper, but won't be worth anything for a few years, if at all).

The offer is:
Base: $166,500
Target Bonus: 10% ($16,650)
RSU: 120k total (30k/yr)

Thoughts on offer? Should I counter?

Additionally there's a yearly target RSU bonus about equal to the cash bonus. Thoughts? 4.5 YOE

Is it misleading to just look at Total Compensation from a $ dollar value/ Total Compensation seems to be much more subjective than base salary in terms of its value. Some factors might be:

RSUs granted on dollar value or by # of shares & stock price trends
Vesting schedule
strike price on ISOs & delta between strike price and real market value

For instance, most of value in Amazon's comp seems to be granted in years 3 & 4, but it's well known that most people last only 2 years max there.
