I'm looking for some advice on how to best address employment gaps on my resume. I took nearly two years off to help take care of my mother after she was diagnosed with cancer. Should I explicitly explain the reason for the gap on my resume or cover letter, or is it better to wait until a potential interview to discuss it? And how much detail is generally expected?

Sometimes in an interview they will want to go over your resume, I would just say, "you might have noticed my employment gap in xyz. I was taking care of a family member. I'm happy to discuss it further or any questions you might have"

Just be open and 89% of the population is totally open and normal back..

You can always put “caretaker” as a resume item and then add like 2 bullets explaining that it’s caring for a family member and how many hours a week, etc. Maybe ask a recruiter or someone who is in a hiring position to see what the best practice is but I would think you might as well put it and then the conversation will come up naturally.

I’ve seen colleagues return to the field after all kinds of personal breaks. Just be matter-of-fact about it. The detail you gave here is incredibly human. You don’t need to include all that in your resume, but something respectful and honest in your cover letter shows strength, not weakness.

Life happens, and recruiters know that. I don't think you need to explicitly address it unless asked. And I don't think a two year employment gap is a big deal for most people.

I think being honest and brief is the best policy. You don't want to seem like you're hiding anything but you also don't want to divulge too much information. So try to avoid making yourself or your former employer look bad by saying something like, "we both realized it wasn't a great fit and it was time to move on." Something like that

Good question on whether to address it earlier or wait until the interview. Might be better to add in something early. I have had a gap and briefly explained why, then focused on what I learned during that time and how I stayed up to date in my field.

Honestly if a company asks or puts more stock into it than “oh that’s cool”, you should run

I would just be honest. I have gaps on my resume and they have never caused me issue when I am open and honest about them. People don't care as much about gap resumes as they used to.

If you’ve gotten to the interview phase… an explanation is more of a formality. If they even bother to ask off up something cursory and then pivot to how you kept up to date with industry developments

Absolutely briefly explsin thst on your cover letter.bon your resume unless they specified needing that i dont feel its necessary and when interviewed you will be able to explain from what you put on your cover letter.

How were your experiences when letting it out the bag early like that?

I recently joined Swiss Re at 30lpa, pretty good manager and work culture. Got a hike of 10% in 3 months without me asking for it. But got an offer from another company which I was interviewing for before joining here and they are offering a base of 45lpa. Now I am unsure how I convey this to my manager coz I want to stay here but at the same time I am salivating over this new offer and wish I get similar numbers here. Is it worth raising a discussion? If yes what would be a subtle way to do so?

Idk how to let go of this :/ Thoughts?
