I'm looking to get out of a charter school. Class sizes are incredibly large. Doing inclusion in current setting, class sizes are 34-36 put in a typical size room. Other teachers have reported up to 38 at other schools within charter district. One teacher to 30+ is an extraordinary feat, but I cannot fathom how this even seems appropriate to those voting for charters.

The reason you can’t fathom how this seems appropriate for those who support charter schools is because you imagine that people have the best interests of students in mind. The facts, however, provide a much different story.

If we were really concerned about our system of education and how we measure up with the rest of the world, we’d look at what world leaders in education are doing and emulate that. We’d find effective ways to improve and strengthen public education.

Charter schools like the one you’re describing and voucher systems exist to make someone rich at the expense of the American taxpayer. Of course, that’s not what their mission statement says, but that’s the goal.

Education has nothing to do with charter schools. In fact, most charter supporters actually want our students LESS intelligent than previous generations for the same reason that slave owners didn’t want their slaves educated. Intelligent people tend to want to do something about oppression, and oppressors just hate that.

Yes, most charter schools are businesses.

I worked for 40 years in the traditional school system as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. After I retired I was recruited to work for a charter school that focused on high school drop out students, homeless, pregnant and parenting teens, and basically the students that traditional schools gave up on. The dropout crisis in America is real and no one wants to acknowledge it. Traditional schools are great for most students, but they aren’t for everyone. There are pros and cons for both, but please don’t paint everyone with the same brush. Traditional schools are great for English only college bound kids, not so much for at promise youth.

Does anyone else think we should go on the same school schedules as other countries? I like how many countries in Asia take one month off for Winter and one month for Summer. I also like the fact there seems to be higher retention rates when students are out only for a month in the Summer.

I taught in a large charter network for 2 years.
We had class sizes of 20 to 25, some as small as 12.

I teach in a public school and these are my class sizes. Charters in my area typically have smaller class sizes.

Our Charters are packed! Resource teachers have had to combine rooms as well to make space for our increase in population. It is a nightmare! We advertise small classes, yet classrooms are filled with 23-24 students in each grade.

Several of the charter schools I’ve visited or seen are WAYYY better than local public schools. I think the leadership of the school makes all the difference.

As the original poster, I should have added that more than half of staff at my particular charter are non-certified teachers and admin without a Master's and zero admin/principal certifications. My specific admin are not qualified to be in their positions and it shows. They're my number one reason for leaving. While most non-certified teachers at my school do amazing regardless, admin cannot claim the same.
I'm in Texas and would love to be at a school with different dynamics. Maybe not all charters are the same as I mine, so I'm open to pros and cons of both typical public schools and charters.

Evaluate every charter as an individual entity. Start with a not-for-profit school. At the small charter school I’ve been part of for over 20 years, our guiding question is always, “How will this decision benefit the students?” It’s an amazing learning community for kids and adults alike.

Worked there for quite awhile. They have decreased the number of teachers and increased the class size and increasing the number of subjects you teach. So basically I doing twice as much work with 30+ students who need individualized attention? ?? It is not working. Student discipline is non-exist and is bleeding into the classroom. Last year was amazing! I taught and students learned. I loved it! This year is trying to just get through the day. The bulling, social media problems, drugs in the restroom, fighting, students walking out of class, high student absenteeism that is not recorded, Student apathy is overwhelming, but don’t try to hold them responsible for their grade. You will be strongly encouraged to bump up grades. Good and strong teachers, as well as the Principal, have left in the middle of the year. I will be following them out of here at the end of the year.

Most schools are looking for SPED teachers. Should be easy for you to find a spot. Check the sizes of classes in the district, but to be honest, the public school system is better for employees, no matter how much we complain. You will most likely have union support if needed.

I was a lead teacher/assistant director for a preschool in California. I'm now living in the San Tan Valley in Arizona looking to be a teachers assistant . If you know anyone hiring, please let me know.

Hello guys! I work as a Campus Tech, I deal with 1200 kids for a Charter K-8th grade and 100 staff. I love working with a school district due to the amount of time we have off during school and summer off. But I’m debating on the pay I feel as I’m under pay for the amount of work that I do, troubleshooting Chromebook’s, laptops, printers, & projects…anything that plugs into the wall I cover. Does anyone else work with school district doing IT work for. My end goal is getting to an ISD school
