I’m personally pro unlimited PTO (my company supports it and it works well for us), but I’m constantly seeing people say it’s a scam. If you are against unlimited PTO, how would navigate salary/benefit discussions with a company that offers it? What would you want to hear or have in writing for you to be comfortable with their offer?

I think it really depends on how your manager and your company handle the unlimited PTO. Every time I've been offered unlimited PTO, there is so much social pressure to not use it in order to not burden other people, and limitations on when you can actually use it. Is it really unlimited if you feel like crap taking it? That's my main issue with the concept of unlimited PTO. But if you work for a company that doesn't make you feel bad for using it, that's great! But I do think that a lot of companies make it a pain to use in order to offer it as a technical benefit but not actually lose money on people taking time off.

Yeah, I imagine the type of work and team really make a difference. I work in a strong team and we work well together so it’s never been an issue for someone to either get ahead before taking time off, or have someone cover in their absence.

You ask people who work there how many days they took over the last year or two and when they took it.

Unlimited PTO is unpopular because in most places you still need approval to get the time off, and it’s been used by companies to not have to pay out accrued vacation time when you leave.

If you work in an industry that has chargeable hours, you don’t really get unlimited PTO as you still need to meet utilization metrics.

You currently have unlimited PTO, think about why it works well for you and the company. Think about a situation where you hire someone who abuses it and what you would do to stop that.

We’ve had unlimited for 3 years now and there have been two people on my team who abused it. They didn’t even make it a full year before they quit because their [obvious] abuse of the policy led to complaints from others in the company (deadlines not being met, being unresponsive, etc.). They knew they were going to be PIP’d during EOY review. The rest of them team (including our manager) all took 20+ days off in the year and had zero complaints. I guess our internal accountability system just works 🤷🏽‍♂️

I've never had an unlimited PTO plan and only heard bad things about it. Glad that hasn't been your experience. If I was offered by a company that had unlimited PTO, I'd want a clear understanding of the process to get requests approved, along with the average number of days current employees take each year. That should tell me all I need to know about whether "unlimited" is actually unlimited or not.

I’d be interested to see if HR has accurate info on avg days people take off. Since we have unlimited, we don’t track it well. My spouse has unlimited and they just stick their days in an outlook calendar that only the team has access to for balancing coverage. I’ve had the flu since last week and was technically working Friday and Today but since it’s the holidays, we aren’t in the office and we are unofficially “shut down” I didn’t even open my laptop and I sent one email. I didn’t put in days off…

The scam part is really with 2 aspects of it. First studies show when companies do not give guidelines of how much PTO they should take most people will take less because they don’t want to be seen as taking too much. And second since it’s unlimited it’s not tracked so when you quit it is not paid out like PTO traditionally has been.

like

Reality is most people carry over time YOY so in either system more employees don’t use all their time. And even with use it or lose it if you quit in the middle of the year you should still get the current accrued amount paid when you leave.

I agree with what others said above.

Clearly with “unlimited” PTO, I wouldn’t expect to be able to take the whole year off, or even half of it.. so there’s distrust from the start since “unlimited” is obviously limited and I don’t know exactly what that limitation is unless you tell me.

As others have said, I would want clarity on how I would take PTO and an understanding of how much a reasonable amount to take is and what others take.

I think that’s fair. It’s written in our policy that we are encouraged to take a minimum of 3 weeks and there is a stipulation that we can’t take off the same day for more than 3 consecutive weeks (ex. taking every Friday off). Exception would be standing Dr appts, like PT, but that would require proof.

All of it in writing every bit unlimited PTO included in the letter, unlimited PTO. I’m there.

I don’t have unlimited PTO. But I see coworkers feel bad for taking it. Or sometimes people who overwork get annoyed they people take PTO. For me, I take my PTO and don’t care what anyone says, except my boss.

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?
