It's important to have a manager who understands the limitations of what marketing can do. Even if we are running the best campaigns, we're not magicians. I've had managers who refused to understand this and made my job very difficult, and then I've also had managers who were former marketers and understood the struggle.
Do your best to identify the issue and a solution going forward. Depending on your team, sometimes they just want a scapegoat. Is it worth staying at a job where your success depends entirely on things you can't control? Fortunate to have a supportive workplace, because I don’t think I’d last long if I didn’t.

I think there are elements in every job. I’ve had success with the OKR framework to align goals and priorities but always had leadership driving that alignment so I was lucky.

We're not. Smart SEO compensation ties to effort metrics you control (content published, optimizations implemented, technical issues documented) not pure rankings/traffic dependent on engineering bottlenecks.
If your comp is tied to rankings without engineering authority, that's a setup for failure. Push for hybrid metrics: Rankings/traffic weighted at 50%, your direct deliverables (audits completed, optimizations shipped) at 50%.
Document every engineering blocker with impact estimates. When rankings tank, you've got proof it wasn't your execution.
If they won't adjust metrics? Start looking—companies that structure comp this way don't understand SEO and will always blame you for their technical debt.
Have you raised the metric misalignment with your manager yet?
