I’m staring at my bonus check and I’ve never felt more like a sell-out. The amount is objectively life-changing, but I can’t stop thinking about the three vacations I cancelled to earn it. My marriage is strained and I haven't seen my friends since last summer. Is there a point where the success just becomes a gilded cage you can't escape? How much is your sanity actually worth in a dollar amount?

Yes. It’s called golden handcuffs.

I totally understand where you are coming from. You grind to make the money but then you don't even have time to spend it. I value my work-life balance much more than any amount of money.

When my bonuses started exceeding most people's yearly income I lost all concept of money. It feels like monopoly money sometimes. Im not married and have no kids so I have practically nothing to spend it on besides my house and family. But I will say, I work regular hours and don't feel like im sacrificing anything i wouldnt have to sacrifice in any other profession. Maybe its time for change for you.

I recall noticing when the amount I pay in taxes a year exceeded most people’s yearly income.

It’s not worth it, stop now. And I’m not kidding. It’s fool’s gold, and you will feel really silly standing in the burned down rubble of your personal life holding a check for $250K or whatever. Congrats, you have $250K and no one to share it with.

Only do this job if you can prioritize the *why* you do the job (ie, I would hope, your family).

Pocket the money, do the bare minimum until the bonus vests and gtfo. If it’s life changing, take the cash and GTFO.

Which firm pays out bonuses so late? 🙄

Wait, what? Attorney 1 - your firm pays year end bonus in June?! I hope that’s not calendar year and is the firms fiscal year. Hell, my firm pays year end bonuses in December, and it just keeps creeping later and later in December. And it pisses off a large portion of our workforce - mainly due to expectations the firm had previously set.

My dilemma:

I'm at a LMM investment bank. Can get crazy sometimes, but otherwise chill. Typically done around 7-9 pm, had maybe three 1 am nights. Haven't worked a weekend in over a month. Fridays almost always done at 5 pm.

Have an offer at a reputable MM bank but probably pretty sweaty. Worth the move?

Just had a hearing on my motion to compel where OC told the judge we hadn’t conferred before filing the motion. Not only did I attempt to confer on 3 separate dates, I attached the emails and his response that he refused to confer to my motion. During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now.
