I have this exact interview coming up this week. It’s been a long time since I’ve done it, so take all this with a grain of salt.
For context, mine is a second round interview. So they’ve already seen my work, this is a chance to go more in depth.
My approach is going to be to tailor a deck to the meeting, specifically to what they are looking for in the role. In this case it’s leadership, integrated thinking, and craft.
I’m going in with three campaigns that hit those in different ways while showing off range (different tones, media etc). I’m gonna keep them as short and to the point as possible but take it as an opportunity to add more context that you often don’t get from a portfolio alone.
To some of your specific questions, my thoughts would be:
- pick the work that encapsulates who you are as a creative. If that’s something that relates to their business, great. But I wouldn’t sacrifice an unrelated piece of work that’s great, for a related piece of work thats not as good.
- I would add context to things, especially if it shows more about the way you work. For example, maybe one campaign had a terrible first presentation and you turned it around. Maybe it started as a one off that grew to a bigger thing. As for things that never launched, it depends on why and how central they are. You certainly don’t want the bits that never launched to be better than what did.
- Strategy can be included if it’s interesting and drove the work. Even then, that should only require a sentence.
I think it’s also an opportunity to say what you learnt in each project, good and bad, that helped you progress and grow.
Anyway, hope that helps and good luck 👊
Thanks a ton! I was thinking the same. A deck with three different types of projects that best show off my creative thinking.
Good luck to you as well
