In my first few research roles, I felt like I was constantly learning things on the fly and worrying that I was “supposed” to already know them. It took time to realize that most people are learning as they go, even at senior levels. That realization was honestly a relief.
When did you start feeling more confident in your role, and what helped you get there?

There are times I still don’t feel as confident as I should. I guess you could say that I’m still learning things on the fly.

I think I JUST realized this yesterday and started to relieve myself of that perfectionist expectation. Thank you for validating the realization! We are all just trying to figure it out. We learn from experience.

What is one of the most frustrating parts of being a scientist or researcher?

I'll tell you what it is: referencing!

You have to do so much of it, and it's so annoying. You have to cite your sources, but there are so many different formats for citations! And then sometimes you don't even know how to cite something, and how are you supposed to know that unless you ask someone who knows? And even then, they might not be sure whether it should be an in-text citation or a footnote…
