In one role, I realized I’d be building processes and systems from the ground up rather than inheriting anything. It felt like more work than expected. Has anyone negotiated salary based on having to build a function from scratch?

Yes. I’d get as close to the higher end of the range or your ask as possible for the initial offer. In your offer/contract, highlight a review at the 6 or 12 month mark for adjustment in compensation. This should be based on any additional responsibilities you took on that aren’t in the original scope of work, milestones reached, certifications acquired by the company as a result of your work. I understand it comes with risk of them not holding their end of the bargain; but it does allow for an objective approach - pay for performance essentially.

I was able to successfully do this, this past year. Asked for 150 due to the nature of the scope (I was also building systems from scratch), they negotiated me down to 135. I required a review for comp adjustment at 6 months and 12 months in the contract. By month 6 they had added more stuff bc there’s always unknowns that come up with building systems, and said there was no money. At month 12 I had successfully completed the ask PLUS additional items and reached milestones the company needed to continue operations - demanded my 150 and got it.

Thank you so much. Really appreciate this perspective!! I will try to do this

I think it's important to talk about why you want to build processes and systems if they already exist. It's about optimizing and saving money for the company in the long run, even if it costs money upfront. You could also talk about the money-saving aspect when it comes to your salary, and how you deserve a premium for all of the future savings you'll secure through better systems.

Appreciate this thank you!

You can negotiate salary based on really anything. Having to build something from scratch is going to be a ton of work. I would definitely ask for more money.

I received a job offer from company A and am currently negotiating salary. I have an interview with company B next week and know that they offer a higher base pay. There’s no guarantee that I will be offered a job at company B but my gut is telling me that company B would be a better fit for me. Should I accept the offer from company A, continue interview process with company B and then rescind my offer with company A if company B offers me a job? Will I be burning bridges?

I accepted already but may get an offer from another HR company in account management around 90-100K. Need advice

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

My current job I make 150k plus a 20% bonus and an annual cost of living raise anywhere from 2-3.5%. Have been in my current position about a year. Things have been a bit bumpy (not a me issue) I have a new supervisor and was recently given 7 direct reports (I had zero before). The new position while comes with a significant raise is a move to California. Any thoughts?

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

If job posting pay was $36.66 hourly (no range) what would be an acceptable offer and counter offer?
