You should never give a potential client an easy reason to not hire you. Your online presence is important. I don’t think you need a $10K website, but I do think it needs to be attractive enough for people to consider contacting you.

Partner 1 what type of law do you practice if you don’t mind me asking? I’m in consumer law and will be building a website soon.

Your website is the face of the company. Yes a good website will help to gain credibility and help to land clients. A good website with good SEO will generate clients

Lol yes. That's why there are whole jobs doing social media marketing and search engine optimization (SEO).... 🤣🫠

Honestly for me, it has been my LinkedIn presence and memberships with websites like Justia that have generated clients. What I’ve found is that the tech savvy clients generally search for you on LinkedIn first before considering a search for your firm website.

Additional Posts in Small Law / Solos

Hi all, I have been practicing for 5 years (admitted in NY & NJ) and recently went in house. I just started a side business of writing blog posts for firms or solo practitioners. DM for more info!

How do you handle billing disputes? Already feel like we’re a steal compared to other firms, but it’s the pits when clients kvetch about the bill after working hard on their matters. For five figure disputes, anyone recommend collections? Don’t really want to institute retainers, especially since it doesn’t seem common for our practice area.

Advice for Of Counsel roles? I am of counsel at a firm where I can set my own rate and keep a percentage of collections, which varies slightly depending on whether the client is one I generated or not. I’m finding that a lot of my work is for firm clients where the lawyer negotiated a flat fee (and the hours worked are less, due to efficiency etc). What is the right way for me to be compensated in this scenario?

I work at a small, 3 lawyer firm. One of the lawyers is not barred in the state we practice. Because of this, the managing attorney has been having him draft motions and other legal documents and use my name and bar number and having me file them because I will have to appear in court for the matter. Is this normal? I am not provided time to review the materials before I file them so I end up working longer days because I am nervous to file something using my name and bar number.
