Don't do it. You'll regret. Bain is the best
Going through the effort to recruit, leave Bain and then restart and integrate at McK is a silly waste of time. Classic âgrass is always greenerâ mentality. Iâm the grand scheme of the business world, the experience is effectively the same across MBB. At high level, pricing and pay is essentially the same. Now if we add Tier 2 or Big 4, then we have a real conversation. Bain has nicer people. McK has a better global brand, but neither difference is worth the hassle of switching firms. There is a reason that switching is extremely rare. There is plenty of travel at Bain if you want it. And the âglobal staffing modeâ at McK is total BS made up to account for crappy local office culture. If you are unhappy at Bain, Iâd suggest moving industries....
I donât agree. The firms do have distinct cultures and if youâre not feeling at home in terms of culture or staffing opportunities it does not hurt to explore. Usually you can re-recruit as you start second year and most MBB firms are looking to poach talent post internships provided you have an offer from your internship. They invest heavily here for good candidates so it doesnât hurt to keep your options open once back on campus if youâre not feeling a great fit. These issues can amplify as you move up in the org so think about where you wasnât to be 4-5 years (assuming you want to be at an MBB long term) rather than the immediate role post MBA. Short term goal should be to secure that offer regardless as it will give you much more leverage with recruiting.
Just hope we travel sometime soon in the future. Rn Iâm an excel and PowerPoint monkey on zoom. Whether thatâs at Bain or McK is irrelevant at the moment
OP, Bainie here and curious - are you saying you want to travel and Bain doesnât have many travel cases? Because that is absolutely not true (though I get itâs harder to gauge in this environment); Iâve never heard of anyone wanting to travel and not getting a chance to do that consistently (because thereâs a good balance of people whoâd rather not, esp. at the Consultant level and above where folks start to have family, etc.).
If you prefer McKinseyâs culture and / or global staffing model absolutely you should explore and think more deeply about the right fit, but I donât think lack of travel (presuming thatâs what you meant, but do correct me if Iâm wrong) is a real differentiator.

Pretty different from some NA offices
Youâve decided this after 1-2 weeks as an SA during COVID?
Most people who choose Bain over McK do it for the culture or cause they're die-hard PE. McK certainly wins over Bain for more staffing options, more travel, more workstream ownership, better secondment / rotation flexibility and better comp / trajectory, so I would certainly recommend choosing McK if those are more important to you. However for these same reasons, Bain also tends to have better WLB (PEG excluded). Also wouldn't necessarily say Bain culture is 'better' but McK does tend to have a 'nerdier' culture on average, so expect more game nights and trivia bars with your fellow starts rather than clubs or heavy drinking events (Recognize these are all stereotypes based on my class / region so encourage you to get other thoughts too)
I am at Bain NY and have never been to a club with my start class. Am I not cool enough đ
Keep in mind that you are experiencing the absolute worst of Bain culture in this WFH environment. Please at least try Bain when we are back to normal. The office culture is REALLY good and extremely diffential to our competitors due the amount of time you'll spend with your colleagues. I have been on a number of sick weekends away with my class at Bain (40+ people who work together choosing to spend their own money and their own weekends to go exclusively hang with each other). That really doesn't happen anywhere else.
The other part is that even when you travel, you're almost always traveling with people from your home office. Among other things, that means on Friday (when everyone is in the office) it's possible to see it catch up with past case team members, teams can easily have reunion lunch/dinner/drinks, etc.
This is something Iâd be interested in as well, and for the same reasons. How does one go about making that shift?
Iâve never heard of someone lateral-moving among MBB as an AC. The closest is there are a few who didnât get sponsored for bschool, went to bschool on their own dime, and then recruited and switched into a different MBB.

Donât expect any travel until 2021.
And donât be surprised if consulting significantly reduces travel going forward. Clients are now likely to realize the work we do mostly doesnât require being there in person every week.
If travel is a higher kpi than culture when it comes to what you look for in a job, then it makes complete sense
... lack of travel is Covid. If you want to travel in a normal world, you can 60-70% of your weeks at Bain
