How to avoid the blame game? I know we can't blame clients who are not competent and cannot provide material in timely manner, but dang it they can't just ask us to perform miracles without giving us any requirements or objectives. Every meeting is always, I will get it to you next time or I am scheduling a meeting internally to discuss... Anybody else frustrated with a lack of accountabilities? How do you deal with that?

My advice you, is to start drinking heavily.

Best example I have of clients being unreasonable is when we were trying to close out a work stream one week, and every day we sent notes asking if they had any needs or anything that might set us back. Friday afternoon they drop a ton of changes that they want to see, but give it to us in a format that we’ve never used before. So we have to spend the weekend interpreting what they sent us and making the adjustments by Monday. Best part, the changes they forwarded us had been sent to them on Tuesday and Wednesday of that week, and they sat on them.

That’s what you’re hired to do right - keep a log of discussions and actions and circulate to the client / internal wider team after every call. This way when shit hits the fan you’ve got a solid, consistent audit trail.

As for the client ‘giving you requirements’ - you need to get the requirements per your SoW, get their sign off (documented in that audit trail) and implement / execute per that signed off requirements doc.

The way I see it - clients can maximise (or minimise) the value they get out of consultants by being sensible (or not). Your job is to deliver on your SoW and highlight discrepancies / bad apples to the higher client management who likely would care (given that they’re paying you a lot).

Your ‘feelings’ and ‘frustrations’ about it are a waste of energy and time IMO

This was my experience with a federal gov client when I worked at a different consulting firm.

That is consulting if you are not ready for this look for another job w people time you can fully control

Push back is necessary sometimes, we can't just let people walk all over us if they are not being reasonable or respectful. There are clients who have been more competent, and I have just been lucky I guess.

My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). Someone told me today that they just assume I’m not interested because I always seem to “run” but I’m not sure how to bring up problems/feelings otherwise. How do you approach these hard questions?

I posted this somewhere else before I remembered that I am in this bowl :) so, I changed jobs 6-7 months ago and I am realizing it is not a good fit. Leadership seem to not want to hear the truth so people tell them what they want to hear and if you don’t middle management gets pissed at you. I am seriously thinking about looking somewhere else. My question is how do you answer the “why are you looking to leave” question without bad mouthing your current company?

I signed for a new job two months ago and will start next month (3 mo notice period in Europe). They were very keen on getting me on-board ASAP before signing but since I signed the contract it has been silent from the new employee. I've emailed them with questions as I'll be re-locating to NL and it takes them 1-2 weeks to reply. Given all that's going on in the world, I'm worried they might fire me before I even start.
