Interviewed at a top litigation boutique, and one of the associates said she’d billed 2700, making her miserable & want to quit. Said other associates had left, so she had to pick up the slack. Run?

Sounds like the firm needs to think about who they put on interviews...

likefunny

Shush! Trade secret ...

Depends. I’m a litigator, and when a case heats up, 2700 pretty much translates to14-16 hour days for two or three months, and fairly chill for the rest of the year. I’ve done it and it’s not as bad as you think.

like

Sounds great if you are early in your career. Better to join a busy firm than a slow firm, and opportunity here to take on more responsibility earlier if they are short staffed. If you’re ultimately looking for work/life balance I’d rethink litigation generally.

like

I think it's can be worth it if it's a substantive 2700 hours (trials, motion practice) but it will be hell if you're just churning.

Do they try lots of cases? And do you want to be a real trial lawyer?

like

If she said that in the interview, run :)

like

Do it. Mentally prep. Get experience.

2700 sounds insane to me. I wouldn’t switch for that unless the prestige is really worth it.

Absolutely. You cannot do a professional job billing that number of hours, nor should you want to do so

Respectfully I’m not sure I agree. That’s two serious trials a year with time off in between to recharge. That’s why I asked if this boutique actually takes cases to trial. If so this is manageable.

What do you do when you feel the goalpost has been/is being moved re: billable requirements? Like there's a spoken vs unspoken? I chose this job based on billables vs salary and what I'm being told I'm expected to do now is 20-30% (at least) > than what was initially agreed upon. Given my other life responsibilities, this is creating a huge strain & I feel like this is slowly getting harder & harder on my spouse & kids. I'm grateful to have lots of good work but not sure how to course correct.

I'm in a litigation, about 9 months in. Is it normal that I spend majority of my time making bundles for my partners (printing, binding, moving docs in a different order whenever there are new documents or he wants to add stuff) reviewing documents and making tables (e.g. dates, which documents are from where), and the only legal work is like notices of admission, list of documents, the occasional research? I'm so bored and I want to quit but I don't know if I have unrealistic expectations.
