Depends where you’re wanting to live. Inside the loop? You’ll need roommates. In the suburbs? $50K is fine
Chief
It's counterintuitive but I have actually found there are more affordable housing options inside the loop than in the suburbs. It's not so hard to find a 1960s era small apartment building or garage apartment in Montrose or the Heights, while everything in Sugar Land or Cypress is newer construction and has more amenities.
Yes. I moved out when making $8 an hour in California!
Whew this gave me anxiety lol. But congrats for pushing through
Do you budget?
In theory, $50k/yr is plenty to live on your own. I know lots of people who do it on far less. The ones that struggle the least are the ones who understand and use a budget.
My personal favorite tool (and I’ve tried soooo many):
https://www.youneedabudget.com/
Btw, this is not a referral link. I love the tool and it was the first one that got us thinking about money the right way, instead of just tracking our spending. We gladly pay for YNAB because our financial picture is a 1000 times better because we use it.
I would have to check the website. I suppose I don’t really care though. This tool works for my wife and I. Once we read Jesse’s book (Jesse devised the process and built the first version, started the business), our money went from about 45 days old to about 160 days old (another way of saying how long would your cash last), with a goal of 360 days old.
Point is, it’s worth what we’re paying because it’s the first tool that put both my wife and I on the same page at the same time (the list of things we tried is long). It’s probably under $100 year cuz I’m pretty sure we would have discussed keeping it otherwise.
Hmm rent prices are astronomical right now. I would say it’s doable with a roommate probably in the outskirts.
Doable, would recommend roommates and obviously depends on where you’re working. The easier your commute to work (assuming not remote) the more work life balance you’ll have
If you can find a dependable roommate and in an area with a decent commute to your job, you’ll be all set! Budget yourself appropriately and you’ll be fine!
I lived alone in the Galleria area from 2010-2020. So yes it’s doable. I didn’t like in crappy places either so you should be fine.
Pro
Rent has skyrocketed in the last year though
If living with parents is not unbearable for you, I would suggest still live with parents and save&invest the monthly rent as down payment when you buy a house in the future. On the other hand, if you really want to move out, it’s definitely doable, but would strongly suggest getting roommates (I had housemates first couple years out of college, saved a lot of money compared to renting apartment on my own)
It’s more than enough to live in Houston. You should be able to find an apartment anywhere around the area.
