Sales? I have never seen a tech SaaS company use this position in this way.
These are almost always implementation and ongoing management / support roles. It is, however, true that the level of seniority really depends on the complexity of the product and the market being served.
Customer success at highly technical B2B can be the same as a SM in B&SI capacity at a consulting firm. Customer success at B2C is very likely a support / customer feedback loop into product management. If savvy enough, can easily move into BizOps.
Most companies won’t tell, but most of the success managers I talk to from other large SaaS companies have targets for either upsell or services
It honestly depends. Ive seen a couple that are basically glorified support roles
You would join at different levels even though the role title can be the same
I’m a junior CSM at Salesforce. There are many different levels ranging from associate to senior director. The difference is in the size, complexity and importance of the customers you are working with. At least at Salesforce there is a strong differentiation between Sales, Support and Success Management. But I know that many other SaaS companies use the CSM role as farmer sales or glorified support.
BDR is sales. Success management is post sales.
BDR roles seem fun to me, however they’re pretty hardcore sales focused. The less experience you have the more cold calling you will be doing. All that BDRs do is following up leads and getting opportunities ready for the account executives (ppl that close the deals). BDR is a junior function. The tenure goes as follows:
1. Business Development Associate: cold calling and getting info on accounts.
2. sales development representative: work on inbound leads - people who downloaded a white paper are being called by SDRs
3. BDR - outbound leads, working with account teams to follow up on leads for larger customers.
Then you either go to become an account manager for a large volume of smaller customers. Or you will become an Enterprise Corporate Sales where you work on the runrate deals for larger customers.
Depending on profiles it differs where you start.
How do I get that role?
