I understand that we need more recruiters like us who understand our plights and stories when it comes to GPAs, backgrounds, etc. But I also feel like we should be seeing an uptick in representation in other depts of companies. Starting to seem like D&I/HR roles are just there to count as token positions that companies have diversity without putting business at risk, which could explain small numbers of minorities past the Manager level compared to counterparts. Feel free to correct me.
Ok so in that case I think it’s a larger scale issue that not enough of us are going to college and graduating with these degrees and high GPAs to get those jobs. As well, even if people did have these credentials, we generally don’t have someone in our family older then telling us when to go get a internship or giving us connections into these kinds of jobs. Like there were very few ethnic ppl in my MST classes. Same goes for IB jobs which probably more so relies on credentials and connections to get in. As a whole we need to build larger professional networks and explain what is important to do while in school and when; then we will see a influx. I’ve already noticed it through some of my younger family members who are in college now and what they are aware of
I understand it does seem as though more "minorities" or black people are in non client facing positions. Which is actually a good thing in a way because the admins and hr folks have a lot of information and are probably close to/ know the people who actually make decisions. However in general I think we minority's need to do better as far as letting people know that accounting is a decent career choice.
When you say client facing, do you mean when you get to director/partner level? Like doing recruiting vs giving presentations or something? Or just we have more people in HR vs actually being a public accountant?
This was more so for corporate America as a whole. But HR vs people in finance/legal/operations/etc. And at all levels
And client facing meaning jobs that deal with clients who drive revenue of a firm or company.
I agree with you 100% on the generational aspect of the issue and being aware of the opportunities available
