It’s a good movie. But I don’t agree that this question should be asked in this way. It’s a marvel movie, if you like other marvel movies then you’ll likely enjoy this one. Not sure why you’re worried about the hype, judge for yourself like any other movie.
OP the fact that you’re already worried it’s a farce to push “some agenda” pretty much tells me everything I need to know. Go see it or don’t, no one really cares. White guys like you are so transparent when threatened.
If you don’t see color then just go watch the movie, if you really think that people getting excited about being fairly represented in a movie is some kind of agenda, then you’re full of bullshit.
@ Director OP: ok... so because no noise is made about super hero movies with a white cast you don’t struggle to decide to go see them. but you struggle with a movie that has a black cast because people are making noise about it? sorry i still don’t understand your question. generally people make a decision to see a movie because they want to see the movie. you are a director. directors make decisions. why are you struggling with this?
TBH I think saying you don’t see color is the most indicative of deeply ingrained privilege and racism.
God this is like a twitter thread. It’s good. Like Wonder Woman good. Representation and celebration. And the writing was fucking amazing
A movie produced by Disney, based on a comic book, aimed at the widest possible audience, which made more money than all the other marvel films over the course of a weekend and you’re afraid that it was a propaganda film aimed at 12 percent of the American population?
Jesus - nobody said people shouldn’t be excited, did they? That’s what you’ve read into it. My whole point was in response to OP - there’s a set of expectations for opinions of this film, please don’t pretend that there isn’t.
It may or may not be fucking amazing - I personally don’t like any superhero films, so it’s safe to say I won’t like this one, but I won’t be seeing it anyway. I’m merely observing what I’ve seen playing out in the media IN RESPONSE to this film so far.
See SR1, I'm labeled a racist for asking if it's a good movie imagine if I saw it and don't like it.
☝🏽😂😂😂
CD how are we not BFFs lolol
C'mon OP. There are thousands of actual reviews for this movie beyond talking about it's significance. Do better!
You must be a “colonizer” lol
I’d say people are worried about judging it simply as a movie because there’s already loads of thinkpieces about how people who give it less than perfect are racist. A judgement of this film is absolutely loaded.
Because you shouldn’t hype a movie because of the race, gender, sexuality, disabilities etc. of the cast. First of all its demeaning to those people. If you give someone a trophy before the competition you know the trophy is bullshit. Aren’t we asking for equality? Let’s see the movie if it’s good we’ll say it’s a great movie and congratulate the actors and of its not we’ll rip on it like we would for anyone else.
As others stated, if I don't enjoy the movie and give my opinion, I'll be viewed as a racist.
I avoided Get Out because of the racial tones, but recently watched and thoroughly liked it for the horror/thriller it was.
Maybe this sounds cliche, but in a world where everything is black or white, I don't see color and just want to be entertained.
@SR1 - it’s not that people are making noise about the movie for being a great movie (they are), is that they’re making noise about the movie for being a “black movie” (they are). It’s had a race-based narrative attached to it - and viewing it - and if you can’t see how that affects people’s thinking regarding it then that’s on you.
There’s people genuinely scared of saying they find it less-than-100 because of the inevitable “racist” labelling, as if having any issue with a movie with a black cast, means you must hate black people.
Lol ACD I'm not going to assume OP is racist, but you can be objective about a movie and not be racist. As a moderate star wars fan I'm deeply disappointed about Last Jedi, that doesn't remove my geek cred.
@D OP: they did no such thing. you did that yourself ACD2 & DDB called you out. DWI.
OP it’s totally ok if you watch it and decide you don’t like it. That you appreciated Get Out proves that you can like an objectively good movie despite its racial agenda. What makes your original question racist is that if Black Panther had an all white cast, you would never have even thought to ask if it was a farce that pushes a white agenda before going to see it for yourself.
P1 where in the hell did you pull that from? Not once did I say that having blacks in leads roles was a bad thing.
Maybe "whites constantly enjoy" is simply a function of population sizes and films being produced to fit the demographic that represents the largest volume of consumers. We're all in marketing right?
Blade was a great movie with Snipes in the lead role, and did fantastic at the box office. Super hero movies are generally widely accepted. I simply asked if this movie was good.
Going back to the population sizes and marketing aspect, it would seem natural that movies that don't have a broad appeal would be produced for specific audiences, sorta like how we develop creative or put media in market.
Hell, will Smith has been the lead in broad-appeal action movies with massive budgets and box office gross.
If you can't look beyond your racism in everything blinders to understand my question then life is going to be a rough place for you.
Only one person in this thread appears to have actually seen the movie and said it was great. So that's good enough for me.
If you've missed all the movies in the past with POC in lead roles being portrayed positively, then you wouldn't understand my question.
If you've missed all the reviews that talk about anything but the quality of the film, then you wouldn't understand.
