It’s a good movie. But I don’t agree that this question should be asked in this way. It’s a marvel movie, if you like other marvel movies then you’ll likely enjoy this one. Not sure why you’re worried about the hype, judge for yourself like any other movie.
OP the fact that you’re already worried it’s a farce to push “some agenda” pretty much tells me everything I need to know. Go see it or don’t, no one really cares. White guys like you are so transparent when threatened.
The “agenda” that black people matter and deserve to be treated like human beings? Yeah that would be so icky, amirite
Why can't it be hyped for both reasons?
AD1, I'm confused by your statement. This is the FIRST superhero movie with an all black cast and director, why shouldn't black people be excited? What does their excitement and subsequent hype have any effect on you? This far the reviews have been pretty positive. So the excitement for this achievement is therefore warranted. This is the same excitement for Wonder woman the first women led and main casted movie of it's time. Sure there is more buzz for BP but that's because Marvel is a giant hype machine. WHO is this hype demeaning to?
White people.
If there’s any “agenda” being pushed by this movie, it’s improving media representation of black people. Specifically portraying them as regal, powerful, royalty and heroes. A portrayal that is incredibly rare for black characters, but that white characters constantly enjoy in the media. If this concept offends you enough to keep you away from the theater, then I don’t know what to tell you, that would objectively make you a racist dick. I certainly hope you go see it and that you think it’s awesome.
It was great. Forget all the baggage, good or bad, that people bring to it, was just a good, fun, superhero action ride.
PU1 you know exactly what OP is talking about. You just chose to put the “black people don’t matter or deserve to be treated like human beings” words into their mouth so that you could switch the topic into them being a racist. Clever, but everyone is immune to that tactic because it happens everyday over nothing. OP is saying is this movie hyped because it’s good or because it’s a mostly black casted movie that features a black superhero.
Be hyped because equal representation matters, be hyped because this director is 3 for 3 so far, be hype because Marvel hasn't really put out a bad movie yet, be hyped because why not?
The white privilege in this post is making me sick.
Is the same as the Ghostbusters reboot - objectively, a pretty crap movie. But if you said so, it’s because you were a misogynistic troll who hates women and is especially scared of strong women. It’s the film’s supporters that wrote that narrative, not the film itself, and it seems a similar thing has happened with Black Panther.
@SR1, allow me to help: OP is both deeply racist and deeply unaware of said racism. The only solution involves patient, compassionate education (and yes perhaps a bit of third-person condescension).
OP is only saying that if there were less black people in Africa then it would be easier to relate to. It’s simple science
Thank you ACD1. PU1 who said black people don't matter or don't deserve to be treated like humans?
don’t really understand OP’s question.. when you go and watch super hero movie with a white cast do you ask this?
Because, out of the 48 or so full feature Marvel movies this is the ONLY one with BOTH a black lead and black director. Consider this...48 movies only 3 had a black lead..
you: A: “I thought it was a great movie! good story line bla bla bla
or B: didn’t really do it for me because because it was too busy bla bla bla. how is this a can of worms ?
Actually, OP you mentioned avoiding Get Out simply based on it's racial overtones, and now similar avoidance of Black Panther. I can understand why someone would throw racism around casually because many who spoke out against both movies were racist. I'm not saying you are, I don't know you, but enjoy these movies regardless of the racial overtones. They are made to challenge you as well as entertain you. So black folks are dressing up and going all out how is this different from Star war nerds? You don't have to be a part of that movement to enjoy the movie.
OP- well if you’d see the movie, then you’d realize that the central conflict of the movie has little to do with “anti” anything. Your excuse is the same rationale that closet bigots use so their perceived reality and comfort within it never have to be questioned. After all, why damage a psyche when you can refuse that a problem exists and live within your rose tinted world for as long as you need to. The privilege in your question is wild.
