“Graphic Designer” yes. But not Graphic Design.
You need graphic design as your base and foundation knowledge to be a good designer for any specialize field. I have never seen a good product designer from bootcamp, never have a good ux who has no design background, no software or game design who are good and never done graphic design work.
Industrial is changing, everyone needs to adapt and learn new things. But this is not new. 20 years ago everyone had to learn new tool called Adobe. 10 years ago we learn “wireframing” and then Sketch and then Figma, and then generate AI. Learning a new thing is not new. People scare of it is new to me…
Not dead so much, but it's absolutely dying. The latest updates from OpenAI last week provide that
It’s going to be more geared towards production design with editing AI or concepting to prompt AI and with less pay for both.
Thank you for sharing your perspective Experience Design Director 1. I 100% agree that the landscape is always changing, and the people who survive are the ones who adapt to the change rather than holding on to what was. People could say the same thing about web designers. When web dev tools became more accessible for the common person, folks thought web designers would be obsolete, but to this day, we'll still occasionally hire a web dev when we're working on larger projects. Sure there's now tools like Webflow if you want something super duper custom without a dev, BUT it still requires the knowledge and understanding of a designer/web dev.
