Is it acceptable to just ask what the salary range is or is that off putting? I’m interviewing soon (3 years litigation experience in NYC, started as a prosecutor now doing commercial/corporate litigation and applying to a boutique run by ex big law in corporate litigation), and the job description just says salary is commensurate with experience. I’d like to go to this firm and am deeply in need of escaping my toxic current firm, so I’d be willing to adjust into their range if need be

Definitely don’t let them make you give the first number. If you have a minimum you need to make the move and are concerned this could
come in below that, it’s worth asking so as not to waste anyone’s time. If you’re super flexible and more interested in leaving than in the number you’d be leaving for, maybe hold back until the second round.

Salary data has to be public for most employers in New York. Keep that in mind. Usually a red flag if it isn’t posted these days.

Hasn’t been my experience with law firms

Do you mean ask before you even interview or after, or just somewhere along the line?

I think 180? I have three years litigation experience including corporate governance. I just am worried about that number being too high and pricing myself out of a job that could set me up for better opportunities down the line

Kind of during the interview? Just want to know the range before I give what number I would be looking for

I would wait for the offer and the counter

The range should be in the job description. If it’s not they’re likely in violation of at least one state’s laws.
It’s not out of the question to begin with the range. It should’ve be a secret. They all want to say they offer “competitive” salaries so ask them.

So I get that in a corporate set up, you are supposed to be sharp and witty and think on your feet. Trouble is, I am extremely slow with comebacks. (Think Ross in Friends/Amy in B99) at the crunch moment, I generally end up not being able to give a good roast back. Unfortunately the best of them come to me like a few hours later (dinner/shower/TV) and I am left ruing and amazing opportunity to have gotten one back. I am awful at jibes and roasts.

Anyone else suffer from this?
