Definitely don’t let them make you give the first number. If you have a minimum you need to make the move and are concerned this could
come in below that, it’s worth asking so as not to waste anyone’s time. If you’re super flexible and more interested in leaving than in the number you’d be leaving for, maybe hold back until the second round.
Salary data has to be public for most employers in New York. Keep that in mind. Usually a red flag if it isn’t posted these days.
Hasn’t been my experience with law firms

Do you mean ask before you even interview or after, or just somewhere along the line?
I think 180? I have three years litigation experience including corporate governance. I just am worried about that number being too high and pricing myself out of a job that could set me up for better opportunities down the line
Kind of during the interview? Just want to know the range before I give what number I would be looking for
I would wait for the offer and the counter
The range should be in the job description. If it’s not they’re likely in violation of at least one state’s laws.
It’s not out of the question to begin with the range. It should’ve be a secret. They all want to say they offer “competitive” salaries so ask them.
