Is it hard to switch from plaintiff side to defense side? Someone told me that some BigLaw don’t hire plaintiff side attorneys. But I didn’t hear about this from any friends at midsize firm for defense.

People switch from plaintiff to defense all the time. However, I would not hold my breath for big law unless you do some high end work

Harder to do from plaintiff to big law but definitely doable for midsize. Matters what you specialize in and if you get lucky.

I did the opposite and I couldn't imagine going back. Grass is far greener on this side IMO - more lucrative, less stress, and more fulfillment

I’m in a biglaw CPG team and kinda wanna jump

Depends on your practice area, location, and honestly the reputation of the plaintiff’s firm. I went from a small firm that did mostly defense employment law, but I also handled some oddball plaintiff’s PI and HOA matters, and switched to a big 4 employment firm. My big firm has hired plaintiff’s lawyers no problem. But there are a few firms with horrible reputations that we do NOT hire from because we know the quality (or lack thereof) in their work.

Plaintiff work exists in big law. What area?

Happens all the time, but it’s generally the opposite switch…

Now manager is threatening me that I will be placed under no hire to IBM.
Is it ethical?

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.

Thanks for your recommendations.

I work in a firm that is known for litigation defense. I’ve been developing my own plaintiffs practice as well. I am able to pay the bills with my hourly defense work, which gives me time to focus on a handful of high value PI case a year on contingency. I was recently negotiating a case and was told part of the reason the claims rep/OC was jerking me around was because they didn’t see me as a plaintiffs attorney. Is there any way to change this perception or does it just come over time?
