It was my case. But they were not very nice people.
yikes, no that’s not okay
They might not know. I worked at a place where I was out on a PIP and my ECD managed that and my CDs had no idea.
Who reported you on a pip?
There is no “normal” in corporate America. It’s a drama-filled reality TV show. You don’t know what you will get from week to week.
That said, the Leo line… “Human•Kind, be both” has never been more needed in our industry and the world at large.
It’s unfortunate if the people you gave a lot to didn’t/don’t reach out, but try not to take it personally. It’s probably weird for them. They aren’t sure what to say. May have been told not to stay in contact (potential legal reasons). Etc.
When laid off in 2024, I never heard a word from my direct manager who happened to be the chief creative officer. We'd worked together for 7 years, and they were my manager for four years. Not. A. Word.
One of my bosses ignored my LinkedIn request for a reco when I got laid off. Yet another wrote me a glowing recommendation. One of my direct managers never reached out to me. But someone who managed me for a few months before that person was hired did.
And then a bunch of team members reached out, including wayyy back former direct managers.
I could tell that the newer to the company bosses and my current team didn’t like me from this 😂
I got laid off in June and my direct supervisor, who also hired me, didn't acknowledge me at all.
No. That’s c*nty
No. Sorry, but they don't care. It's a business to them and they don't give any fucks.
Mine didn’t and she hired me. 😵💫
Same
In my experience, they may not have known it was coming. Had a writer on my team walk into our CDs office and say bye. Neither of us had any idea layoffs were even happening, let alone someone on our team.
Been in the game 25 years. The desperation in the industry is palpable. People show their true colors, the good ones will empathize and help you however they can. Sadly though, it feels dog eat dog now more than ever. I just don’t see a good future in advertising for the majority.
Don’t take it personal. Some people find the time to say bye. Others are just flighty, while others don’t because they’re busy or it didn’t occur that you left. Rare are the people that don’t like you.
The biggest thing that hasn’t been acknowledged here is HR often preps leadership on what to say and not to say when laying someone off. Additionally, they tell them not to contact or speak to people without HR present and/or until after they’ve signed and processed their exit paperwork. Lay offs are messy and companies are compelled to protect themselves. It’s shitty, and feels personal, but a lot of times it’s just business.
They should at least give you "good luck and thank you" type message. But the reality is, HR makes people scared of the consequences of saying the wrong thing to people being let go. Corporate world is so litigious that it can feel safer to say nothing than say something that can be used against you or the company in the settlement period.
Nope, when I got laid off & when any guys from our team got laid off they don’t just say bye but even send us off at least with drinks & a whole meaningful send off.

My ex CD declined my linkedin invite and never reached out after I had a sudden lay off after reporting my direct manager for harassment and discrimination. Yet same CD viewed my linkedin several times after.
