As a senior manager who is starting to look at exiting, I’d say it all depends. As a senior manager, it seems more likely that one of my clients who likes me would want to hire me... but as a senior or manager mathematically there’s probably more opportunities in general available at your level. So I guess as a senior manager or director you’re going to have more access to the hidden job market is my point; which might mean better opportunities for you.
I’m actually thinking about staying doing diligence just at a smaller firm where I’m a bigger fish in a smaller pond and have a clearer path to partner. However, I’ve had multiple of my corp dev clients mention they’d love to have me if I ever leave the firm!
Senior to manager level is the best level to switch and don’t wait if a good opportunity comes along. Take it from a SM who has worked in FDD for more than 10 years
Thanks for sharing. Do you plan on staying in FDD for the long haul?
I think manager is the best spot to leave. Junior enough you can still easily switch careers than when director but senior enough to have actual experience compared to a senior associate.
I’d agree. Experienced manager is where your technical and soft skills start to mature. That said exiting as a manager is noticeably harder than senior.
