Is Stern PT worth it for building a network in NYC? I went to one of the West Coast schools with a strong alum network, but I don't feel the same strength here (naturally). No plans on moving back West

I did the Stern PT program. My focus was upskilling, expanding my network, and setting myself up better long-term to open new doors. Here is my take…

Net-net, you get out what you put in. Unlike the FT, you have to put more effort in to socialize and make genuine connections. In FT, it’s more natural, everyone has more free time to spend together studying, joining clubs, etc. In PT, everyone is juggling their jobs, and outside lives with school. People are there for a more diverse set of reasons so you have to find the people who want to build relationships like you - but there are many. You’re empowered to join extracurriculars but many meetings happen mid weekday so it’s not super realistic.

It’s a grind, but worth pushing yourself. I think what’s really unique is that you are in classes, working with people on projects who are all (mostly) highly motivated people across diverse industries in different types of roles and experiences. People I never would have otherwise met or networked with in NYC who I now have at least a baseline relationship with.

At the end I came out with an entirely new group of 5 very close friends who were even at my wedding, and a much larger network of friendly faces/acquaintances I would never hesitate to reach out to for perspectives or referrals. The program is a grind but I would 100% do it all again if given the option. As always the value of the experience is relative to your personal circumstance and goals however.

This is awesome. Thank you for taking the time to share this. How successful were those who wanted to pivot careers?

Are there other reasons than building a network that you're considering an MBA? Anecdotally I've heard decent things on the network side of the Stern PT program but the recruiting isn't the greatest as the internships/jobs are mostly targeting the ft students

Do you know what kind of jobs you would want to pivot to? If it's a traditional post-mba path like consulting then FT is the way to go. Will also be better for the networking and learning aspect.

If you're happy with your current position/role and just want to move up within it then PT could be an option but make sure that you would actually need it to advance

Tbh I don’t know many people in the program who were there to make a big career pivot. It’s not exactly what the program is designed for. But I’m sure people have. As somebody said above, there isn’t really formal recruiting out of the program as there is for the FT. But you do get full access to Stern’s career services, and I know that people have used them and had good experiences.

Deloitte helped pay for about half. The rest I paid on my own. It’s definitely a tough cost to justify, which is why I mentioned it being relative to everyone’s personal situation. It’s a ton of money, I was able to afford it, and I did get what I wanted out of it. I think career switches through the program are easier if you have your sights set on something that is related to/adjacent to your existing experience. You can focus your classes on an area to go deep in and then still leverage your existing experience to pursue that area. For example, if your background is in marketing and you want to switch to investment banking, this MBA isn’t likely to help you do that since you won’t be able to recruit for that. But if you have a tech/product background and you want to get into a relevant area in consulting, I believe this will make you more attractive to those opportunities.

Hello all! I am looking for a job in finance/investments, but I’m having trouble attracting attention from employers. I have a finance degree from UGA, but all of my experience (3.5 years) is in sales (tech and real estate), so no relevant internships unfortunately. Any advice on how to market myself better and where I should be looking would be greatly appreciated!

Interviewing question: for anecdotal “tell me abt a time when..”, & similar questions - are you allowed to recycle stories from your undergrad years or do they only look for post grad/work stuff? Afraid some of the stories that sounded okay at undergrad recruiting might now come across as a bit “lightweight” in this context...like would they eye roll if we start talking about that one time we did a science competition sophomore year of college (even though it taught an important lesson)..etc.🤔
