Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

You are right! Communication is huge, but so is problem-solving: especially when you can show how you’ve made things easier, faster, or more efficient. I once negotiated a raise just by showing how I streamlined a workflow. It’s not just what you do, it’s how clearly you tie it to value.
Thanks for the feedback!
You’re absolutely right—communication skills are crucial in salary negotiations, but they’re far from the only high-value transferable skill. Here’s a breakdown of several key skills that play an important role in successfully negotiating salary, especially across industries and roles:
⸻
1. Communication Skills (Verbal and Written)
• Helps you clearly articulate your value, needs, and expectations.
• Enables active listening—essential for understanding the employer’s constraints or offers.
⸻
2. Persuasion and Influence
• Enables you to effectively advocate for your worth.
• Builds confidence in how you position your skills and experience as essential to the employer’s success.
⸻
3. Emotional Intelligence
• Lets you read the room and pick up on subtle cues (tone, body language).
• Helps regulate your emotions under pressure and remain calm, respectful, and confident.
⸻
4. Confidence and Self-Advocacy
• Belief in your own value is often what sets successful negotiations apart.
• People who can confidently speak to their past successes, metrics, and impact tend to receive higher offers.
⸻
5. Research and Analytical Skills
• Prepares you to benchmark salary data, understand market value, and assess the total compensation package (not just salary).
• Equips you with objective justification for your request.
⸻
6. Strategic Thinking
• Helps you understand long-term career goals and how the offer aligns (or doesn’t).
• Guides how and when to negotiate based on timing and leverage.
⸻
7. Problem-Solving
• Useful when the employer can’t meet your full request—you can creatively explore alternatives (e.g., more PTO, signing bonus, flexible hours).
⸻
8. Negotiation Tactics
• Includes skills like making the first offer strategically, using silence, asking open-ended questions, and framing counteroffers constructively.
⸻
Summary
While communication is the bedrock of any negotiation, combining it with confidence, emotional intelligence, and strategic preparation significantly boosts your chances of securing a favorable salary. These are all transferable skills that apply across industries—from tech to healthcare to education.

“Self-starter” is always a good one - signals you don’t need to be chased to follow through and take initiative without being asked.
The only skills that matter for salary negotiations, are the ones the employer (and hiring manager) cares about for this role. People may like other skills, but they are not going to pay a dime more for them unless it is needed for thd role they are hiring for. Thinking any other way will lead to disappointment.
Comms and analytics skills imo!
