Is there a way to get into management other than working your way up? I have been an admin for 10 years at 3 different companies; I had to start over when I quit teaching for my health. No regrets there, but it is frustrating financially.

I want so much to grow in my career, and my manager knows that. But he has blocked me from moving up, learning new skills, and even getting a certification I was offered by his boss’s boss. I am at a loss. I have been looking for 6 months but no calls back.

Just seeing this now.

There are a few things to try, but this is the stealth mode approach.

Make the library your friend - pick up books on leadership, management, psychology, crucial conversations - etc. try to read 10 pages a day. Basically doing school over again.

If you can afford signing up for LinkedIn, there is a lot of the training available for whatever you need.

Volunteer - see if a local shelter or non profit needs help with managing equipment or coordinating an event.

Have you tried talking with recruiting firms that deal with contract roles? Robert half, TekSystems?

On the flip side - some people do the admin job as part of their own side hustle/small biz.

Use the benefits that your company gives while you are there

I suggest. Your first book be crucial conversations to talk with your boss on career development and what that looks like at this company.

If this is a larger company, chat with a few other leaders (in title or not) and see how they are progressing forward.

Thanks, project leader! I have done all those things and was told to stay in my lane.

I’m hoping someone might have some ideas about this- I’m currently five years out of law school with a clerkship, a tax LLM, 3 years of experience doing transactional tax work and a few months of EC/VC experience (which I recently switched to from tax). I like the EC/VC work, but I don’t know how long I want to stay in biglaw. Can anyone weigh in on how employers for in-house roles might look at my experience in a year or two?

What are your thoughts on the Scrum Master role? I’ve worked with a few now and out of 5 of them, only 1 seemed to be of any help. Most of the time we have to explain every detail multiple times and they still don’t understand what we’re doing. I feel that the role should be reserved for employees with experience in the systems they work in.
