I am retiring this year (end of June!). 20 years, still love the job, want to go while I still love it. 20 years in engineering prior, loved that too, but was ready for a change. (Both roles have frustrations and all, but for me the ups far outweigh the downs.)
Those who can, do; those who can do more, teach.
Fantastic! Hats off. I wish you all the best in your teaching career. May God grant the strength like a buffalo.
Next year will be year 35 for me.

I didn’t think I would have retired last yr. It wasn’t my plan but mgt changed and 1/3 of us left (2 retired). I just hit 30 years too. I’m so glad I bought years when i was first hired, bc if I didn’t I’d be miserable right about now. Sometimes you do what you have to do and hope and pray that it all works out.
I have one more year, I don’t know if I can make it.

I was let go due to cuts. I may or may not continue teaching as these past two years have been the hardest for me.
I could retire but I don’t want to be bored. I guess I’m a bit fearful of leaving something I’ve done for so long. Still, students are disrespectful and defiant on top of the fact that admin is weak. I am not sure what to do. Struggling to make a decision.

That’s tough. Library as a subject is a bad rap for the teachers. I’ve done plenty of observations in library, both in public and private schools (we service 5/6 parochial schools). The kids are always louder, and even the less disruptive kids are easily pulled into the antics of others. That’s tough. And add the language barrier 😬
Maybe add book related socializing in your lesson plan next yr ???
We have one more month after you. Enjoy your vacation break. Relax, refresh and rejuvenate the mind, body, and the spirit.
I left last year after over 20 years of teaching due to student behaviors, lack of administrative support, lack of classroom support, and added requirements placed on us by our state department of public instruction. The teacher demands having gotten to the point where it shouldn’t be a place where we need to put in 12+ hour days - every day.
It leaves us a little to no time for our mental health.
This has been the best year I have ever had!
I don’t know what is going to happen to the profession that I used to love .
Good luck and God bless you as you exit the field/retire.
This is where I am, contemplating leaving this year. I have all the same reasons why.

I am sorry to hear so much saddest in our profession. If fault can be found, I would look to the leadership and administration. My guess is they hire certified teachers and then send them to schools with administrators like themselves who simply say go teach and bring us great results. No team work and no support and no vision for the staff, students and families. So no criticism here without a suggestion to improve. Give me the “worst “ school you have and the teachers/support staff who want to be there. Let us collectively decide what we need to improve the school culture and what our kids need to be successful and we will turn the school into a fun place to be and new learning is a priority for everyone. Let’s support our staff and kids to get them what they need. Let’s treat out students like they are our own kids….and in many ways they are our “own” kids. We are smart enough to do this. We just need to have our collective strength unleashed!!
I sometimes fantasize about quitting, but I don’t know what else I would do. I’ve been teaching for over 20 years and I feel like I’m too old to start something new. I don’t have enough to retire on. So I may spend the next 20 years doing this. Just kind of feel stuck like I stayed in this field too long.
Maybe start small, and do something new in your classroom? Or start on a new certification? Even look at an admin add-on? Doesn't have to lead to being a principal, maybe a department leader?
Can't wait to see what some of these quitters end up with for a job after they leave. Best and simplest job I have ever had. Sure there are some frustrations, but overall....
And what do you teach? I’m guessing a non-tested subject. Way to be supportive of your fellow teachers! Really…quitters? We have stuck it out for 20-30+ years. That’s not quitting. It’s called retirement and it’s well-deserved.
Avoiding the urban schools until license is complete. Too many violators, inattentive parents, and problem kids anymore, to deal with for the low pay.
After 22 years, I am retiring in 2 weeks, while I am still young enough to move around and stay healthy. Teaching really takes a toll on you, and leaving my job means I cannot afford to live here in California. Still, I am planning a relocation to South America, where the pace of life will be slower, surrounded by nature, good people and culture, and living more healthily, cheaply. I will not miss my daily commute at all.
