I’ve been here long enough to know the written promotion criteria are meaningless. What actually gets people promoted is invisible. How do you figure out the real rules of advancement without being in the inner circle?

1) Revenue generation; 2) grow the practice (client-wise, personnel-wise, and profit-wise); 3) be generally likeable, although depending on your revenue generation that's not a deal-breaker.

1. and 2. are part of the written rules. 3.
may not be but is obvious/common sense. There are other unwritten rules like have “important” people pulling for you and be willing to help with your business development in a very hands-on way. By the way, some of those important people need not only be internal. Important/institutional clients probably help too.

Hi Everyone, Started my career in government 5 years ago working in an operational role, then focussed on HR for 3 years working my way up to a middle manager role in HR as a business partner and completed my Level 7 CIPD. I don’t think HR or government is for me anymore and looking to find something new, now 24 feel I have a lot of transferable skills and knowledge but worried about private companies in other professions taking me seriously. Grateful for any advice - thanks in advance!

I am looking for the post made by the junior associate with the voicemail from the female partner on a Friday night telling her how stupid she is. I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

It is in appropriate to ask what the compensation for a position is after a first interview if they want you to go on three more and the interviewers on my first told me that was above their pay grade to tell me?????

Seems kind of ridiculous for a business to want to waste so much time to find out after a handful of interviews that the pay isnt aligned with my needs ......

I can see in biglaw not bringing up knowing damn well if you get an offer itll likely be high, but this is a midsize
