Yes, an Associate Underwriter or UA role would be the best points of entry into UW, if you don't have any education. Some companies will consider you for entry UW roles if you express intent to earn your certification, but I'd consider that an exception to the norm. For more senior or specialist UW roles, you'd be expected to have your certification completed.
Thank you! I have an interview for an associate UW role tomorrow.
Try enrolling for CIP. Though thats not required with your experience
Hey, I’m extremely late to this. But UA experience is definitely a good entry point into underwriting. However I’ve seen multiple people who have been on the producer side get offered underwriting roles with carriers just based on their experience working in the industry alone. So I would try to find an UW role if you can, but look for UA openings as a backup plan.
Granted, the job market is a lot different now than when I saw these transitions so it might be a lot tougher to move directly into underwriting now given how tough the market is. But I just wanted to share my firsthand experience.
UA, AINS, CPCU
Definitely CPCU or RPLU
