Hi All, My sister has done Computer Science engineering Bachelor degree and has 5 years of work experience in India. She is applying for MBA at https://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/programs/mba/full-time-mba/ and https://kelley.iu.edu/programs/full-time-mba/academics/majors-minors/marketing.html. Her overall goal is to get into Software Product management. Any suggestions if any of these MBA’s can open path in the desired space or if she is better of doing an MS in Comp engg. to further develop deeper Technology skills. Thanks
Facebook (Meta) Product Management (IC5) or Google Cloud Marketing S&O/ Annual Planning (L6) role if I want to eventually be working on Product Strategy for consumer tech?
Heard it hard to pivot from Google S&O to Product Strategy even with 20% projects internally…

This isn’t something to stress or quite frankly even think about
Companies will level you based on what you’ve done and how you interview
Every company is different. Titles will get your foot in the door in something higher.
If you are concerned about breadth, then I would suggest looking into YouTube or LinkedIn courses geared for product to keep up with everything.
But even big companies don’t make you know everything. Keep an eye on what is in your product arena and you should be fine.
Have you met the "Peter" principle. We promote the in-competent out of technical involvement with the issue to where they can only talk about the problem. They can't do that? Promote them again. if/when they change jobs, they won't be hirable at the level that they are used to being.
.. they are not your problem any more, and they will not be hirable unless they understand that they -are- the problem.
I'm seeing a lot more "peters" in interviews. When it is very obvious, we cut the interview very short, and speak very positively while shoving them out the door. They can be somebody else's problem
Interesting, I had not heard of this.
It depends what company you’re at. Are you in big tech?
Thats good to hear, I've no issue with taking different title, I want to get more rounded experience from other companies.
I think it's great how recognised you have been. Just because it's the same company does not mean you didn't work hard to achieve those successes and couldn't replicate elsewhere. You may find a culture shock moving companies as product is different everywhere but just make sure you accept an offer where your experience is valued. You'd be surprised how many companies are so bad at product that your experience would be welcome. I see no issues. Also I don't focus as much on titles as they mean different things to a hiring manager that named it so. Look for where you can add value, are passionate and get comp package you deserve. Good luck!
Thanks for this, it's reassuring to hear. I think that's part of the problem as I've been with the co oany as it's grown into a larger organisation and is still learning how Product fits in. Having no context of how others do it led me down the path of thinking everyone else does it much better and I'd not fit.
Don't worry about title. Focus on gaining experience whilst increasing your salary. That's all you need to do.
