I recently interviewed with MITRE for a systems engineering role to make the move from Leidos where I feel underpaid for the work I do and for my experience ($85K). I have 4 YOE, a STEM degree, and soon will have a Masters Degree. I’m looking to make around $120K in the new role at Mitre. Does anyone have any insight into comp there? This would be in the DC metro area. Does $120K seem reasonable or am I dreaming?

Yeah, it sounds like they want to keep you where you are for their own selfish reasons. If they don't give you the growth you need and deserve, time to refresh the resume.

Honestly, three years of being “next in line” is a long time. If they keep saying they need you where you are, that may be your answer. I’d start exploring externally. Loyalty is great, but it should not come at the cost of your growth.
It depends… are you willing to trade the leniency, that I’m sure your boss gives you, for being the new person at the new firm in a role that they believe they deserve has?
I’ve been on the other end of that coin, and I’ll tell you, you become the workhorse that all the s*it gets dumped on… so the question becomes, are you comfortable? If so, stay… if not leave…
But that’s been my experience…
When you are excellence at something they will never let you leave. Always be looking around, conversations are free.

Might be time to move on.
Yes it sure is!!
Yeah, I will say it’s your time to dust your resume and move on, your intellect is not worth to be stocked in a position where you’ll not experience growth for years.
Also, after three years of being told the same thing, chances are it's not going to happen any time soon. If it's a role you are wanting, I would have started looking last year!
Definitely time to move on. Either that or stop putting in extra effort and just put in the bare minimum required.
If you want to move up to a different role, and if it looks like you won't be getting it where you are now, then start looking elsewhere.
Not sure why this is even a question. Absolutely.
