How much are you networking already? I think that's gonna be the most important thing to make this kind of pivot. Besides talking to everyone you know, I’d recommend highlighting transferable skills like communication, customer insights, and project management in your resume and cover letter (if you aren't already). Maybe consider roles like content strategy, product marketing, or even marketing operations where your sales experience can shine.
That's honestly one thing I haven't been good at doing, is the networking thing. I was thinking about attending some Job Fairs, just to shake some hands..
I've got to start networking a lot more though. I just did a revamp of my resume, and Cover Letter - Worked wonders... Getting emails again for interviews!
If you want to transition functions you really need to do it with your current company - especially for marketing. Most, if not all, marketing jobs will want to see marketing experience. With your current company you are more likely to have them move you cross functionally to build your expertise and grow in the company
Question, and your current role is there anyway to talk to the company and see about getting into marketing? At my job of 13 years, I had gone to my boss after about five years and asked if I could take on the marketing manager role with my Sales. She kinda looked at me with a crazy look in her eye, but I told her I wanted to get more experience under my belt and she agreed. I negotiated a higher salary. He was still able to work in both roles … help me gain a lot of experience and if I would’ve gone for a marketing job after probably 3 to 4 years of that experience, I would’ve been in a good position.
