What I did in my earlier years was sign up with the different agencies and when they had me do the online skills testing for Microsoft Office suite, I took a screenshot of the results page and PDF it. Then, when I was applying for jobs outside of the agency, in my cover letter, I would attach the PDFs and say “I am proficient with, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.” If they did “office skills“ testing, I included that as well and then in person would jokingly say, “that just proves I know my ABC’s and 123’s.“
I remember taking the Excel test at an agency and didn’t do well. I asked the recruiter if I could do it again and get a better score. He agreed and I did it over and over and over again (it was quiet in the office) until I learned all of the tasks on the test and figured out how to do them . Then I took it one more time scored 100% and said thank you very much. I am done. The recruiter laughed and he said that whole scenario just showed him my personality and how tenacious I am as well as my work ethic.
The other thing I would say is put a positive spin on their concerns/objections if you can. For example, if they seem concerned about you being somewhere for less than a year, just say something along the lines of “at the time the right opportunity for me had not presented itself, so I thought this short term opportunity seemed interesting and an opportunity to learn (insert new skill) until my long-term professional opportunity presented itself.. It has been really interesting/enriching to work at these different companies and see how they do things differently than how I was initially trained. Overall, I think it has been helpful in giving me skills and diverse experience that I can then bring to my, long-term professional home, once I find it.
I definitely agree with you! Trying to make the best out of the situation and give myself time to get into the right frame of mind.
Have you considered working with agencies? That's how was about to break into the admin role with a few years of experience.
I’ll have a look at applying to a few more agencies, thank you!
I would try to highlight other skills you have that could transfer to the admin role, specifically to the tasks they have listed for the role you're wanting.
Be creative and think outside the box when it comes to your skill set and experience. Especially experience that relates to time management, event planning/project management, multi-tasking, problem solving, sound judgment, taking initiative etc.
For example, I've been interviewing for some roles and although I've done extensive domestic travel planning for executives, I don't have professional experience with booking international travel. However, I do have a good amount of experience with booking my own international travel so I make sure to mention that.
Thank you so much
I went through a similar experience last year! Most of my experiences were only for 1 year but it was due to circumstances that were out of my control.
One of my recruiters basically wrote a cover letter for me describing my reasons for transitioning from job to job when she would submit my resume to her clients. I found this helped a TON!!
Thank you so much! I’ll give the explanation a try. Full transparency seems to be the way to go
Just an update, I’ve now got an interview! Tips and advice would be greatly appreciated!
