I’ve interviewed for roles where I felt slightly overqualified, and I wasn’t sure whether to push for higher pay or accept that the role’s band might cap it. Has anyone successfully negotiated a higher salary in a situation like this?

Yes! Ask for them to send you the offer to review, and you'll get back to them within 24 hours.

After taking at least 12 hours - come back, say you're really excited to join the company - but you want to know if the offer is negotiable. The hard truth is.. companies never lead with their best offer.

Make sure you've done your research, and can speak to why you're asking for more, and be direct. if the offer pays 90k and you want 100k as an example - say, 100k/year is reflective of my skills, experience, title and location based on 'list your facts'.

They'll be very direct in letting you know if they can or can't do it. But you ALWAYS need to ask, that's my best advice. Good luck and you got this!!

Advisor 1 - I’d take the second offer. The. At your 90 day review, ask for a formal review of performance e and compensation; or hedge your bets - and ask for it in 6 months.

But you want to avoid accepting the job, and then negotiating too much. Or they’ll call the number 2 candidate, hire them and then walk you - unfortunately.

In the current job market you may very well be overqualified, but there are 10 qualified pr also overqualified applicants lined up behind you. Not the time to be bold unless you can afford to let them walk away.

like

So true. The current market seems oversaturated with qualified candidates

I find that even within each band, they have specific budget for that role. In one department level 4 meant one budget. And in a different department level 4 meant a higher budget.

like

True. Funding out what the bands are has been tricky for me

I usually ask about the range for the role. I always try to negotiate the higher end of it, but over that they usually won't do. I have seen offers get rescinded when people tried to push too hard.

Very fair. I normally try this too

If only employers were tranparant and paid what people were worht

You should always try to negotiate. Some organizations will have salary bands that represent a limit, but there's usually a lot of flexibility within those bands. Say you were expecting more for the role, and see if you can find any flex. As long as you're respectful and don't come off as unprofessional or recklessly demanding you won't offend anyone.

Very fair. Thank you!

You can most certainly ask - I think if you’re in the final stages and get an offer see if they can up the comp or your role, but they may be tight on budget so it really depends. I wouldn’t do this negotiation until only you have the offer and also gauge how strong the relationship with the hiring manager is

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

Hi everybody.
Right now I’m working as a junior product engineer in Amsterdam. From januari on I’ll be a medior product engineer. And now I’m in the middle of negotiating about my salary increase. The salary that I’m being offered feels low (41.5k).
Is there an other product engineer that could tell me if my gut feeling is right or not? Thanks in advance!

Currently I work for a small company that does the construction of small cell utility poles and roof top sites for the major cell carriers like VZW, T-mobile, AT&T and so on. I am a project coordinator but I do everything under the sun. Created project tracker. Submitti bids, sourcing material, negotiating price on materials, handling post construction inspections, scheduling sub contractors, notifying stakeholders, coordinating with construction managers - property owners - building management.

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

Hey fishes, recently got an offer of 245k plus a bonus, but no specificity and at least 3% cost of living annual raise. My current job I make 150k plus a 20% bonus and an annual cost of living raise anywhere from 2-3.5%. Have been in my current position about a year. Things have been a bit bumpy (not a me issue) I have a new supervisor and was recently given 7 direct reports (I had zero before). The new position while comes with a significant raise is a move to California. Any thoughts?

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!
