I am frustrated with the current work as i didnt find anything productive to learn.Continued in com KPMG @
Have a 4 round loop interview for Sr. Product Manager at Amazon coming up through the MBA pathways program soon.
If I land it the trajectory of my life and that of my family changes but I'm starting to feel the pressure. I haven't had a lot of traction for job searching since I graduated in December so this is the best lead I have and I'm getting scared now.

You dont work for Accenture, so stfu cuz you are clueless about our promo structure, KPMG
Just do it. Learn the role, master the role and move on. You’re an analyst, you’ll get roles that you really want as you grow in your career
^your goal is max utilization but you cost the firm very little compared to Manager+ so feel free to take your time. You do have *some* luxury
dont do it! You are first year analyst! You can handle some bench time without hurting your performance! PMO is the worst bitch role you can get out of college. I suggest you to go to the office and talk to as many people as possible to get a grasp of their project experience and see who are the best clients in ur town. After that, depending on your interest, pick a functional domain, and get a role in that!
Unless you want to develop your brand as a PMO, you should try as hard as you can to stay out of it. Otherwise, you will just keep getting PMO roles in the future. Just FYI, 2 weeks bench time is nothing. I have had 4 months bench time and I just took external training to keep myself busy and away from “threat” emails. I also got promoted that year and I got into strategy from FS as well. Use your bench time wisely and dont waste time in roles that you dont feel 100% in.
All analysts I had over the last 4 years went in one of 2 different directions:
- most pushed themselves to learn the actual scope of work and did a great job as PMO. They all moved to MC roles, got nice international travel opportunities, did very well and got promoted.
- others settled with doing only what asked from them to do and always needed guidance and instructions and babysitting.
Easy to tell which ones turned out to be more successful in the firm.
Agreed with D1, your best route is to take the role, kill it, and then you’ll have more opportunities to shift to something you like more. I went from PMO to a much more technical role and I feel like learned a lot from my time in PMO
Send them all an individual email/skype/in-person asking what skills will be needed in the next phase. Train up on that skill. Make sure the people in Sr Mgmt and staffing know you're interested. Sounds liek you've swam 90% of the way, don't turn back now
Thanks for the responses! I've been at the firm for alittle over 1 year. All of my roles have been in PMO and I would prefer to try something different (I've already expressed this to my CC and TFS). This role would be about 8months long with the potential for extension however it is a travelling project which I don't mind so much. In all, I just don't want make a mistake and or be miserable as I have been in previous roles. But aside from this role I just keep getting contacted for PMO roles, most local. Still think I should pursue this specific role or stay on the bench?
Thanks A1, great tips and I appreciate it. Would it be an issue if I continue to decline roles, especially being so junior? Is there ever a time I should just 'settle' for a role? I also have another interview on Friday...
Needing to max your utilization as a first yr analyst is BS.
Ive gotten promoted at under 60% as a first year analyst. Taking a role that will help build key skills for the future and absolutely killing it will get you promoted.
Completely agree with what A2 said! Find out what skills are needed for T&O and take the bench time to do trainings. Express your interest to previous leadership of wanting to continue on the next phase if possible in your area of interest. I’m sure you’d be a great fit since you have legacy client knowledge that another analyst may not have. Accepting another PMO role will definitely pigeon hole you if that’s all you’ve done at the firm for 2+ years which is where you’d be at the end of the 8 month role you accept. Utilization is definitely hard and wanting to stay chargeable but I think it gets to a point where you have to ask at what cost and figure out where you’re trying to go career wise and come up with a plan to get there.
If you don't want to do PMO, what else do you know how to do? In the past year you've had to of learned some transferable skills.. if not, take the PMO role, learn the technical/strategic side of the project as well as killing the PMO piece then market yourself by what the project was instead of just PMO!
Go with your gut. Does at least 1 attribute of the project appeal to your career goals? If no, then no. This is a time of year where every level is on the bench so you've got at least a month or 2 of bench available
Not sure what A1 is talking about. Your utilization targets are at an all time high as an analyst, so no, you do not have the luxury of sitting around on the bench thinking about what you'd like to do. Do the job offered and network at the same time to find your next great step.
What are you doing to move in a different direction? What type of work apeals to you?
My story is just like A1, take chances, be proactive, it will work out in your favor.
ACN 2- I am interested in T& O. For one, I met some really great people on my previous project and learned alot about that area. I am keeping in contact with them as there might be some T&O work I can be involved in during the next phase of the project. Also trying to go to the local ACN office to network more.
A1 mind dropping a burner, bud??
PMO sucks...you're getting pigeon holed. That's the risk of focusing on utilization. Now when you leave, you're most qualified for....PMO
